Transformable Seats

Abstract: The present subject matter relates to a transformable seat (100). The transformable seat comprises a support structure, a seat base (106) pivotally coupled to the support structure at a first end of the support structure, and a back rest (104) pivotally coupled to the second end of the support structure. Further, the seat base (106) comprises a first surface (202) and a second surface (204) for providing sitting support and lying support respectively to the occupant. Similarly, the backrest (204) comprises a primary surface (206) for providing sitting or lumber support and a secondary surface for lying support (208). The transformable (100) seat further comprises at least a pair of kinematic linkages (114) to movably couple the backrest (104) and the seat base (106) to the support structure so as to facilitate the pivoting motion of the backrest (104) and the seat base (106).

Specification

CLIAMS:1. A transformable seat (100) comprising:
a support structure having a first pedestal (102-1), a second pedestal (102-2) and a cross member (102-3);
a seat base (106) pivotally coupled in between the first pedestal (102-1) and the second pedestal (102-2) of the support structure , wherein the seat base (106) has a first surface (202) that is substantially contoured and a second surface (204) that is substantially flat;
a backrest (104) pivotally coupled in between the first pedestal (102-1) and the second pedestal (102-2) of the support structure and above the seat base (106), wherein the backrest (104) has a primary surface (206) that is substantially contoured and a secondary surface (208) that is substantially flat; and
a pair of kinematic linkages (114) on two sides of the support structure for movably coupling the seat base (106) and the backrest (104) to the support structure, wherein the pair of kinematic linkages (114) facilitate the pivoting motion of the seat base (106) and the backrest (104).

2. The transformable seat (100) as claimed in claim 1, further comprising a headrest (108) removably coupled to the backrest (104).

3. The transformable seat (100) as claimed in claim 2, wherein the headrest (108) is pivotably coupled to the backrest (104).

4. The transformable seat (100) as claimed in claim 1, further comprising a locking lever (124) disposed on a side of the support structure for restricting or allowing a pivoting motion of the backrest (104).

5. The transformable seat (100) as claimed in claim 1, further comprising a recliner activator (116) disposed on a side of the seat base (106) for actuating a reclining motion of the seat base (106) and the backrest (104).

6. The transformable seat (100) as claimed in claim 5, wherein the reclining motion of the backrest (104) is actuated by a second gas spring (502).

7. The transformable seat (100) as claimed in claim 1, further comprising a calf support (112) coupled to the seat base (106), wherein the calf support (112) is adapted to pivot about a face (134) of the seat base (106) to toggle between a folded position and an unfolded position.

8. The transformable seat (100) as claimed in claim 7, wherein the folding and unfolding motion of the calf support is actuated by a first gas spring (608).

9. The transformable seat (100) as claimed in claim 1, wherein the seat base (106) is adapted to pivot about the first end of the support structure to toggle between the first surface (202) being on top and the second surface (204) being on top.

10. The transformable seat (100) as claimed in claim 1, wherein the backrest (104) is adapted by the kinematic linkages (114) to toggle between a vertical position with the primary surface (206) in front and a horizontal position with the secondary surface (208) on top.

11. The transformable seat (100) as claimed in claim 1, wherein the pair of kinematic linkages (114) is one of a four bar linkage an a five bar linkage.

12. A passenger transport means for transportation of occupants, the passenger transport means comprising:
a plurality of transformable seats (100) for providing seating support to the occupants, each of the plurality of transformable seats (100) comprising:
a support structure attached to a floor of the passenger transport means;
a seat base (106) pivotally coupled to the support structure and having a first surface (202) and a second surface (204), wherein the seat base (106) is rotatable about an axis with respect to the support structure to toggle between the first surface (202) being on top and the second surface (204) being on top;
a backrest (104) pivotally coupled to the support structure and having a primary surface (206) and a secondary surface (208), wherein the backrest (104) is rotatable about an axis with respect to the support structure to toggle between a vertical position with the primary surface (206) in front and a horizontal position with the secondary surface (208) on top; and
a pair of kinematic linkages (114) on each of two sides of the support structure for movably coupling the seat base (106) and the backrest (104) to the support structure, wherein the pair of kinematic linkages (114) facilitate the rotating motion of the seat base (106) and the backrest (104); and
a plurality of transformable berths (700) for providing lying comfort to the occupants, each of the plurality of transformable berths (700) comprising:
a berth bed (804) having an upper surface for an occupant to lay upon; and
a pair of kinematic connections (806) to provide support to the berth bed (804), wherein the one end of the kinematic connections (806) is coupled to the berth bed (804) and the other end of the kinematic connections (806) is coupled to a berth frame (802), and wherein the berth frame (802) is attached to one of an inside wall of the passenger transport means and a roof of the passenger transport means.

13. The passenger transport means as claimed in claim 12, wherein each of the plurality of transformable seats (100) further comprises a recliner activator (116) disposed on a side of the seat base (106) for actuating a reclining motion of the seat base (106) and the backrest (104).

14. The passenger transport means as claimed in claim 12, wherein each of the plurality of transformable seats (100) further comprises a headrest (108) removably coupled to the backrest (104), for providing head support to the occupant;

15. The passenger transport means as claimed in claim 12, wherein the first surface (202) of the seat base (106) is substantially contoured and the second surface (204) of the seat base (106) is substantially flat.

16. The passenger transport means as claimed in claim 12, wherein the primary surface (206) of the backrest (104) is substantially contoured and the secondary surface (206) of the backrest (104) is substantially flat.

17. The passenger transport means as claimed in claim 12, further comprising a calf support (112) coupled to the seat base (106).

18. The passenger transport means a claimed in claim 12, wherein the pair of kinematic connections (806) is one of a four bar linkage and a five bar linkage.

19. The passenger transport means as claimed in claim 12, wherein the berth bed (804) is foldable towards the berth frame (802).

20. The passenger transport means claimed in claim 12, wherein the transformable berth (700) comprises a ladder (1102) for access to the transformable berth (700).

21. The passenger transport means as claimed in claim 12, wherein the transformable berth (700) comprises an upper fall-out protector (1202).

22. The passenger transport means as claimed in claim 12, wherein the transformable berth (700) comprises a lower fall-out protector (1302).
