Turbine Center Frame Fairing Assembly

Abstract: A fairing assembly (30) is provided which is located between a frame hub (32) and an engine casing (31). The assembly provides for use of a metallic structure in combination with a light weight low alpha material in order to improve engine efficiency and performance. Relative growth between the dissimilar materials is compensated for by a flexible bracket (90) which provides biasing force on one of the assembly components in a cold engine condition as well as allowing for growth at the high temperature operating conditions of the engine.

Specification

WE CLAIM
1. A fairing assembly (30), comprising: a frame hub (32) which is spaced radially
inwardly from a casing (31); a metal strut (40) extending from said frame hub
(32) radially outwardly toward said casing (31); a faring (60) formed of a low
coefficient of thermal expansion material, said fairing (60)
extending between said casing (31) and said hub (32) and disposed over said metal strut (40); said fairing (60) biased in a radial direction by a flexing bracket (90) which compensates for relative thermal growth between said fairing (60) and one of said frame hub (32) and said casing (31).
2. The fairing assembly (30) of Claim 1, further comprising a flange (34) at an outer band (64) and an inner band (62).
3. The fairing assembly (30) of Claim 2, said flange (43) having a single fastener mount (77).
4. The fairing assembly (30) of Claim 3 further comprising at least one multiple fastener mount (84).
5. The fairing assembl y (30) of Claim 4, said multiple fastener mount (84) including a spacer (82) formed of higher coefficient of thermal expansion material than a fastener extending therethrough.
6. The fairing assembly (30) of Claim 5, said spacer (82) having a shape that matches a profile of the multiple fastener mount.
7. The fairing assembly (30) of Claim 1 further comprising a clip assembly (182) connected to said fairing (60).

8. The fairing assembly (30) of Claim 7, said clip assembly (182) connecting said fairing (60) to an adjacent fairing (60).
9. The fairing assembly (30) of Claim 8, said clip assembly (182) being U-shaped
10. The fairing assembly (30) of Claim 8, said clip assembly (282) being Y-shaped.
11. The fairing assembly (30) of Claim 1, said fairing (30) comprising an inner band (62), an outer band (64) and a hollow airfoil (66) extending between said inner (62) and outer band (64).
12. The fairing assembly (30) of Claim 11 further comprising a plurality of fairings (60) circumferentially arranged between said frame hub (32) and casing (31).
13. The fairing assembly (30) of Claim 12, wherein adjacent fairings (60) are connected by a fastening assembly (181).
14. The fairing assembly (30) of Claim 13, said fastening assembly (181) extending tangentially relative to said fairing (60).
15. The fairing assembly (30) of Claim 13, said fastening assembly (181) including a bolt and at least one spacer (85).
16. The fairing assembly (30) of Claim 15, said at least one spacer (85) being formed of a material having higher thermal coefficient of expansion than said bolt.
17. The fairing assembly (30) of Claim 13, said fairing (60) including at least one flange (76) extending from an inner band (62).

18. The fairing assembly (30) of Claim 13, said fairing (60) including at least one flange (76) extending from an outer band (64).
19. The fairing assembly of Claim 18 further comprising said flexing bracket (90) connected to said outer band (64).
20. The fairing assembly of Claim 19, said flexing bracket (90) defining a flexible connection between said fairing (60) and said frame hub (32).
