“Utility Bin For Vehicles”

Abstract: The present invention relates to a storage compartment being installed in dashboard of the automobile used to store CDs, books etc. More particularly, the present invention relates to a storage compartment with a provision for a mechanism which will hold the stored item/articles in their place when the vehicle is in driving condition. The storage box (3) is being cover by a lid. A first leg (18a) of the lid is connected to the article holding [eg: CD, Books, Cupholder etc] mechanism through a pin (15), the said pin is operationally configured with holding rod (9) and holding rod link (10), second leg, RH side leg (18b) is operationally configured with a leaf spring (6). The inner lid (2) of said storage box (3) is having a push-push latch (17), which unlocks the lid partly while the same is pressed, and thereafter the said lid is lifted manually to an open position where the notch (16) of the second leg (18b) gets engaged in the leaf spring (6) to hold the lid in open position.

The following specification particularly describes the invention and the manner in which it is to be performed.

FIELD OF INVENTION
The present invention relates to a storage compartment used to store CDs. books etc. More particularly, the present invention relates to a storage compartment with a provision for a mechanism which will hold the stored item/articles in their place when the lid is closed.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION:
Modern vehicles afford occupants many amenities to help one enjoy time spent traveling. Besides offering conveniences that aid an operator in driving, conveniences may offer sense of comfort and luxury. Examples of these amenities are music systems and storage compartments provided within the vehicle to facilitate luxury needs of the occupants. Incorporation of these conveniences into the vehicle may pose a challenge to a manufacturer.
Amenities added to vehicles must adequately serve the occupant needs, while remaining aesthetically pleasing at a minimal cost to the manufacturer. To meet these ends, music systems and data storage compartments have been integrated into the dashboard of vehicles using minimum amount of components. A vehicle operator may use integrated conveniences while driving, requiring brief interaction with those conveniences. Accordingly, glove boxes and open storage spaces in a vehicle dashboard allows for quick access while driving, reduced cost to manufacturers, and a pleasing look to consumers.
U.S. Patent No. 5,890,755 discloses a glove box door latch assembly. It includes a glove box door pivotaily mounted on a vehicle for movement between an open position and a closed position. A striker is mounted on the vehicle. The striker includes a mounting portion for attachment in the vehicle and includes a laterally reduced neck portion extending outwardly from the mounting portion. The neck portion has a striker opening there through. A latch claw assembly is mounted on the glove box door and includes a latch claw for engaging the striker opening of the striker when the glove box door is in the closed position. First and second opposing living hinges are disposed on the glove box and positioned on opposing sides of the latch claw. The living hinges guide the neck portion of the striker into the latch claw assembly such that the latch claw engages the striker opening when the glove box door is in the closed position.

U.S. Patent No. 6,945,579 B2 discloses a glove box door assembly for a glove box provided in an opening of an instrument panel of a vehicle defining an engagement surface includes a door body rotatably attached to an instrument panel of a vehicle about an axis of rotation. The door body has an inner surface and an outer surface. A bin extends outwardly from the inner surface of the door body, and includes an outer wall. A damper extends outwardly from the outer wall of the bin, and includes a damper surface. The glove box door assembly is movable between a closed position and an open position. The damper surface is disposed at an acute angle relative to a plane substantially perpendicular to the axis of rotation, and engages an engagement surface of an opening of the instrument panel to decelerate the glove box door assembly when the glove box door assembly moves from the closed position to the open position.
The existing Glove boxes or closed storage compartments are not provided with anything specifically designed as CDs, books and such similar item storage with a provision to hold securely the articles in place during the vehicle driving conditions. In present invention the storage box is provided with the storage bin specifically designed for CDs, books etc. storage and a mechanism unit to hold the stored things in place.
OBJECTIVES OF THE INVENTION:
The objective of the present invention is to provide a storage bin to be fitted on vehicle dashboard, with lid, specifically designed for CDs, books and such similar items storage, and a mechanism designed to hold the stored things securely in place during vehicle driving conditions. The mechanism is designed such that it will hold the CD boxes, books etc. securely to avoid rattling and possible damage to stored items during rough road driving. The mechanism will be completely automatic, which will engage the stored items on closing the lid, and will disengage when the lid is opened.
SUMMARY:
The present invention relates to a storage compartment used to store CDs, books etc. More particularly, the present invention relates to a storage compartment with a provision for a

mechanism which will hold the stored item/CD's in their place when the lid is closed. The present invention provides a storage compartment and article holding [eg: CD. Books. Cupholder etc.] mechanism with a lid mounted on the vehicle dashboard. The storage compartment has a lid to close the storage compartment and giving an aesthetic cover for the compartment. The storage compartment has an article holding [eg: CD. Books, Cupholder etc] mechanism which consists of a spring loaded rod fitted on the outside of the container wall. At the end of the rod fits a spring loaded link which presses against the CD boxes, books etc. to hold them firmly in place. A stopper is provided on the bin to push the link out of the bin opening and make it clear to put in the CD box, books etc.

together with the following detailed description serve to explain the principles of the
invention.
Figure 1 illustrates an open view of the storage compartment in accordance with an
embodiment of the invention.

Figure 3 illustrates an Inner lid of the storage compartment in accordance with an
embodiment of the invention.

accordance with an embodiment of the invention.
Figure 6 illustrates an exploded view of only the holding mechanism in accordance with an
embodiment of the invention.
Figure 7 illustrates an auxiliary view of only the Article holding [eg: CD, Books. Cupholder
etc] mechanism in engaged position in accordance with an embodiment of the invention.
Figure 8 illustrates an auxiliary view of only the Article holding [eg: CD, Books, Cupholder
etc] mechanism in disengaged position in accordance with an embodiment of the invention.

accordance with an embodiment of the invention.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PRESENT INVENTION:
While the invention is susceptible to various modifications and alternative forms, specific embodiment thereof has been shown by way of example in the drawings and will be described in detail below. It should be understood, however that it is not intended to limit the invention to the particular forms disclosed, but on the contrary, the invention is to cover all modifications, equivalents, and alternative falling within the spirit and the scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
Before describing in detail embodiments it may be observed that the novelty and inventive step that are in accordance with the present invention resides in a storage compartment. Accordingly, the drawings are showing only those specific details that are pertinent to understanding the embodiments of the present invention so as not to obscure the disclosure with details that will be readily apparent to those of ordinary skill in the art having benefit of the description herein.
The terms "comprises", "comprising", or any other variations thereof, are intended to cover a non-exclusive inclusion, such that a setup, device that comprises a list of components does not include only those components but may include other components not expressly listed or inherent to such setup or device. In other words, one or more elements in a system or apparatus proceeded by "comprises... a" does not, without more constraints, preclude the existence of other elements or additional elements in the system or apparatus. The following paragraphs explain present invention wherein a storage compartment. The invention in respect of the same may be deduced accordingly.

Accordingly, the present invention provides a storage compartment being installed in interior of a vehicle, comprising:
a storage box (3) with a lid, whereby the lid consisting of two parts namely first part as outer lid (1) and second part as inner lid (2), the inner lid (2) comprising two circumferential legs (18) in order to achieve lid rotation around axis (8), the first leg, LH side leg (18a) of the Inner lid is connected to the article holding [eg: CD, Books, Cupholder etc] mechanism through a pin (15), the said pin is operationally configured with holding rod (9) and holding rod link (10), the second leg, RH side leg (18b) is operationally configured with a leaf spring (6), the inner lid (2) of said storage box (3) having a push-push latch (17), which unlocks the lid partly while the same is pressed, and thereafter the said lid is lifted manually to an open position where the notch (16) of the second leg (18b) gets engaged in the leaf spring (6) to hold the lid in open position.
In one aspect of the present invention, the storage compartment having slots for keeping compact disk, books and such similar items.
Another aspect of the present invention, the outer lid (1) and inner lid (2) both screwed together by screws (5) to form the complete lid.
Still another aspect of the present invention, the lid is mounted on the storage box (3) by means of an axis pin (8) which is knurled at one side and has a button on the other side for fitment.
One more aspect of the present invention, if the lid is in locked position the leaf spring (6) remain is pre-stressed against the second leg (18b).
Yet another aspect of the present invention, the leaf spring (6) pushes the lid to the unlocked position, while push-push latch (17) is pushed.
Further aspect of the present invention, during opening of lid, the first leg (18a) of the inner lid (2) rotates and causing the pin (15) to push the holding rod (9) towards front side of the opening of storage box (3).

The present invention is described with reference to the figures and specific embodiments; this description is not meant to be construed in a limiting sense. Various alternate embodiments of the invention will become apparent to persons skilled in the art upon reference to the description of the invention. It is therefore contemplated that such alternative embodiments form part of the present invention.
The present invention provides a storage compartment being installed on the dashboard of the vehicle. The storage compartment has a holding mechanism to hold the stored stuff at their appropriate position/location. When the storage compartment is open, the article holding mechanism allows the withdrawal of stored article or to place more articles inside the storage compartment.
Referring to figure 1, 2 and 3, the storage compartment comprises a storage box (3) being covered by a pivotable lid. The pivotable lid comprises two parts i.e. an upper lid (1) and an inner lid (2). The upper lid (1) and inner lid (2) are screwed together to form a lid.
Further as shown in figure 3, the pivotable lid has two circumferential legs (18) on either side of the lid i.e. left hand side leg (18a) and right hand side leg (18b). Each leg is provided with a slot (19) for mounting of a rotary gear (7). The storage box (3) is provided with cavities on left hand and right hand side corresponding to the position and size of the circumferential legs (18a, 18b) of inner lid (2). The circumferential legs (18a, 18b) passes through the said cavities in order to achieve lid rotation about an axis pin (8). Also left hand side leg (18a) actuates the closing and opening with stopping mechanism and right hand side leg (18b) is actuating the engaging and disengaging of article holding mechanism.
The pivotable lid is provided with a cylindrical cavity (20) at upper end while the storage box (3) has similar cylindrical cavities (21) on each of the upper corner. An axis pin (8) passes through both the said cylindrical cavities (21) of the storage box (3) and the lid in order to mount the lid pivotally with storage box (3). The axis pin (8) has a knurled end and a button on the other end.

The inner lid (2) is provided with a push-push latch (17) at the lower side. Similarly the lower side of the storage box (3) is provided with a hollow groove (22) corresponding to the push-push latch (17). The hollow groove (22) locks the push-push latch (17) of the inner lid (2).
The LH side leg of the inner lid (2) is connected to the article holding [eg: CD, Books, Cupholder etc] mechanism through a pin (15) as shown in figure 6. When the lid is opened, the LH leg (18a) of the inner lid (2) also rotates, causing the pin (15) to push the holding rod (9) to front side which is towards the opening of main storage box (3). As the holding rod (9) moves ahead, the holding rod link (10) has a cam feature (14) which touches Ihe rib feature (13) on the box (3) and causes the rotation of the holding rod link (10). Due to this rotation, the holding rod link (!0) moves out of the way of the CD's or stored items and clears the way to put in more item into the main storage box (3) or take out the item stored in the main storage box (3) as shown in figures (8) & (9).
Referring to figures 10-12, the RH side leg (18b) of the inner Lid (2) is driven by a leaf spring (6). When the lid is in locked position, the leaf spring (6) is pre-stressed against the RH leg (18b), as shown in figure 10. The lid is locked by means of push-push latch (17). When the lid is pressed, the push-push latch (17) unlocks the lid and the leaf spring (6) pushes the lid to the unlocked position, as shown in figure 11. Further, to open lid completely the lid is lifted manually to open position where the notch (16) gets engaged in the leaf spring (6) to hold the lid in open position, as shown in figure 12. Two rotary gear dampers (7) are fitted on each of the leg of inner lid (2) in order to dampen the lid movement when the lid is released from open position under gravity.

WE CLAIM
1. A slorage compartment being installed on the dashboard of vehicle comprising,
a storage box (3) with a lid, whereby the lid consisting of two parts namely first
part as outer lid (1) and second part as inner lid (2), the inner lid (2) comprising two
circumferential legs (18) in order to achieve lid rotation around axis (8), the first
leg, LH side leg (18a) of the inner lid (2) is connected to the article holding
mechanism through a pin (15), the said pin is operationally configured with holding
rod (9) and holding rod link (10). the second leg, RH side leg (18b) is operationally
configured with a leaf spring (6),
the inner )id (2) of said storage box (3) having a push-push latch (17), which unlocks the lid partly while the same is pressed, and thereafter the said lid is lifted manually to an open position where the notch (16) of the second leg gets engaged in the leaf spring (6) to hold the lid in open position.
2. The storage compartment as claimed in claim 1, wherein the storage compartment having slots for keeping compact disk, books and similar items.
3. The storage compartment as claimed in claim 1, wherein the outer lid (1) and inner lid (2) both screwed together by screws (5) to form the complete iid.
4. The storage compartment as claimed in claim 3, wherein the lid is mounted, on the storage box (3) by means of an axis pin (8) which is knurled at one side and has a button on the other side for fitment.
5. The storage compartment as claimed in claim 1, wherein if the lid is in locked position the leaf spring (6) remains pre-stressed against the RH side leg (18b).
6. The storage compartment as cfaimed in claim 5, wherein and the leaf spring (6) pushes the lid to the unlocked position, while push-push latch (17) is pushed.
7. The storage compartment as claimed in claim 1, wherein during opening of lid, the

LH side leg (18a) of the inner lid (2) rotates and causing the pin (15) to push the holding rod (9) towards front side of the opening of storage box (3).
