Venting Mechanism For A Battery

Abstract: ABSTRACT VENTING MECHANISM FOR A BATTERY A venting mechanism for a battery (102) is disclosed. The battery (102) comprises a casing (104) having a first end (106) and a second end (108), a top lid (110) located proximate to the first end (106), and a bottom lid located proximate to the second end (108). The bottom lid (112) comprises one or more tear lines (204) having a thickness lesser than a thickness of the bottom lid. The one or more tear lines (204) extend radially, from a location proximate to a center (202) of the bottom lid, over the bottom lid to define one or more flaps (208). Further, the one or more flaps (208) are to partially detach from the bottom lid along the one or more tear lines (204) when an internal pressure inside the battery (102) increases beyond a safe pressure to relieve the internal pressure of the battery (102). <>

Specification

1. A battery (102) comprising:
a casing (104) having a first end (106) and a second end (108)
5 located opposite to the first end (106);
a top lid (110) located proximate to the first end (106); and
a bottom lid (112) located proximate to the second end (108), the
bottom lid (112) comprising one or more tear lines (204) having a thickness
lesser than a thickness of the bottom lid (112),
10 wherein the one or more tear lines (204) extend radially, from a
location proximate to a center (202) of the bottom lid (112), over the bottom
lid (112) to define one or more flaps (208), and wherein the one or more
flaps (208) are to partially detach from the bottom lid (112) along the one
or more tear lines (204) when an internal pressure inside the battery (102)
15 increases beyond a safe pressure.
2. The battery (102) as claimed in claim 1, wherein the one or more tear lines
(204) are provided in form of grooves by carving out material from the bottom lid
(112).
20
3. The battery (102) as claimed in claim 1, wherein the one or more tear lines
(204) are to rupture when the internal pressure increases beyond the safe pressure,
wherein rupturing of the one or more tear lines (204) initiates the partial detachment
of the one or more flaps (208) from the bottom lid (112) to define one or more vents
25 (210) to relieve the internal pressure.
4. The battery (102) as claimed in claim 1, wherein the one or more tear lines
(204) comprise:
a first tear line (204-1) located proximate to a center (202) of the
30 bottom lid (112);
a second tear line (204-2) radially extending towards an outer end
(206) of the bottom lid (112);
22
a third tear line (204-3) interconnecting the first tear line (204-1) and
the second tear line (204-2);
a fourth tear line (204-4) located proximate to the center (202) of the
bottom lid (112);
5 a fifth tear line (204-5) radially extending towards the outer end
(206) of the bottom lid (112); and
a sixth tear line (204-6) interconnecting the fourth tear line (204-4)
and the fifth tear line (204-5).
10 5. The battery (102) as claimed in claim 4, wherein the one or more flaps (208)
comprises:
a first flap (208-1) defined by the first tear line (204-1), the second
tear line (204-2), and the third tear line (204-3); and
a second flap (208-2) defined by the fourth tear line (204-4), the fifth
15 tear line (204-5), and the sixth tear line (204-6).
6. The battery (102) as claimed in claim 5, wherein the first flap (208-1) is to
partially detach from the bottom lid (112) in a clockwise direction and the second
flap (208-2) is to partially detach from the bottom lid (112) in an anti-clockwise
20 direction.
7. The battery (102) as claimed in claim 1, wherein the one or more tear lines
(204) are absent from one edge of each of the one or more flaps (208) to enable
partial detachment of the one or more flaps (208) from the bottom lid (112).
25
8. The battery (102) as claimed in claim 7, wherein absence of the one or more
tear lines (204) from the one edge of each of the one or more flaps (208) allows
angular bending of each of the one or more flaps (208).
30 9. The battery (102) as claimed in claim 1, wherein the thickness of the one or
more tear lines (204) is determined based on the safe pressure.
23
10. The battery (102) as claimed in claim 9, wherein the safe pressure is in a
range of 25 to 35 pascal (Pa)
