Vertical Muffler Mounting Structure For Vehicles

Abstract: Various mounting constructions have been employed to support the muffler of the vehicle at a predetermined position on the vehicle chassis behind the vehicle cabin to permit easy installation and easy serviceability. Generally, these mountings are secured to the support structure rearward of the vehicle body or chassis. Conventional muffler mountings suffers from reduced ground clearances of the vehicles particularly for mining application vehicles which are more prone to stone hitting which damages the muffler system and these constructions add on weight of vehicle and have less rigid structure. In this invention, the Vertical Muffler mounting structure comprises; two cylindrical members connected by two C Bracket assemblies, one at the top and the other at the middle and inserted on a box assembly at the base for support. The structure is further supported by a stay rod device which is connected to the chassis. The structure is rigid and light weight with fewer fasteners and is cost effective and easy to construct. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
Referring now to the drawings wherein the showings are for the purpose of illustrating a preferred embodiment of the invention only, and not for the purpose of limiting the same.
Now referring to the figure-01-05, in accordance with this invention, The vertical Muffler mounting structure comprises;
Box assembly, at least two cylindrical members(7,8) inserted on said box assembly, at least two C-brackets (6,10) inserted on the said cylindrical members at the middle and top position, at least two support plates (9) connected to the said C-brackets, first sub-assembly bracket (11) mounted on top of said C-bracket (10), second sub assembly comprising of stay rod and bracket member (13) and bracket (14) is connected to the rear side of the said C-bracket (10 ) to provide support to the whole muffler structure.
Said Box assembly having bottom plate (1) ,front plate (2), bushes or spacers (3), rear plate (4) and top plate (5) . said box assembly is made after connecting all box assembly components together to form box like structure. Said top plate (5) comprises four weld nuts welded from bottom side of said plate for providing supports to twin steered axle front fender.
Said two C-Brackets (6 and 10) are mounted by inserting it to the said cylindrical members (7,8) at the top and middle position. Two support plate (9) are mounted by welding it to the said c-brackets (6 and 10) at the space provided therein. The said two C-brackets (6,10) are welded to the pipes (7 and 8); bracket 6 is welded in the middle portion of the said cylindrical member and bracket (10) is mounted by welding to the top of the said cylindrical members (7,8); the said C- bracket (6) is inserted on the said cylindrical members (7,8) up to middle portion and welded on top side of top flange and bottom side of bottom flange. The said C-bracket (10) in mounted by inserting it on top portion of said cylindrical members (7,8)

and welded to it at bottom side of bottom flange and bottom side of top flange. The said cylindrical members (7,8) are then inserted in to the said box assembly and it is welded to the top and sides of the said box assembly, said first sub assembly (11) is mounted on top of said C-bracket (10) by welding for integrated support to the tail pipe from this structure; Now the Muffler mounting structure is ready for the fitment on the chassis, said muffler mounting structure is fitted on the chassis of vehicle with the help of holes provided on the said front plate of said box assembly and bushes or spacers provided therein. Second sub-assembly comprising stay rod (12), bracket member (13), and bracket (14). Said stay rod (12) is provided on the chassis to support the overhang mass of the structure. At the top portion of said structure, said stay rod is clamped on the top side with the bracket (13) which is attached to said C- bracket (10) and on the bottom side of stay rod (12) is mounted on the chassis with help of bracket (14).
Figure 5 shows a muffler (M) vertically mounted onto the muffler mounting structure according to this invention. The muffler is placed in the curvature portion of support plates (10) and is held firmly by strapping means (S). The muffler is positioned and strapped such that there is very less or no lateral or longitudinal movement of the muffler.
Figure 6 shows the tail pipe (T) of the muffler mounted in the aperture provided in
the top portion of the vertically mounted muffler to allow exhaust gases to escape
into the atmosphere. •
In accordance of this invention, method of assembly comprising the step of
• Preparing the box assembly,
• Inserting the said cylindrical members (7,8) on the said box assembly,
• Inserting the first C-bracket (6) on the said cylindrical members up to the middle portion and welded on the top side of top flange and bottom side of bottom flange of said bracket(6),
5

• Inserting top C-bracket in the cylindrical members and welded on bottom side of bottom flange and bottom side of top flange of said bracket (10),
• Connecting said two support plates (9) to the said C-brackets (6 and 10) respectively,
• Fitting the sub-assembly bracket (11) on top of said C bracket (10),
• Fitting whole muffler mounting structure on chassis of vehicle with the help of holes provided on said front plate of said box assembly,
• Attaching another sub-assembly comprising of bracket (13), stay rod (12) and bracket (14) to the rear side of said C-bracket (10) with the help of bracket (13).
ADVANTAGES
Weight of the system is less by 50% compared to similar structures. Since the parts used for mounting of the muffler do not have any replaceable components, all the components are designed so as to last the life of the vehicle. In addition to this cost of the muffler mounting system is lower. The construction of the muffler mounting system is simple yet aesthetically better and cost effective for the vehicle to suit. Same system gives the support to the tail pipe as well minimizing the no of supports required for holding tail pipe on such a high position.
