The present invention generally relates to a system and method for handling washers, more particularly it relates to a system and method for picking up a stack of washers from packing tray and dropping it in a storage tray for further using in a engine assembly line.
Background of the invention
Copper washers are mainly used in oil lines for diesel engines. Copper being soft material fills the gap & creates a leak-proof joint. However utmost care is required to be taken while handling copper washer till its assembly as slightest dent, scratch mark on face of washer leads to oil leakage.
In the current practice copper washers are received from vendor in plastic tablet packing. These packings cannot be put directly on assembly stages as it is impossible to pick up washers manually from the tablet packing for assembly purpose. Hence the washers are dumped in storage bins kept on assembly stages. One has to pick up the copper washers from bins & assemble on to the engine parts. In this practice, due to cleanliness issue of bins, copper washers get damaged. The damage also happens due to sockets, spanners kept in bins.
Hence, there exists a need to provide a system for handling the copper washers from storage to assembly line that will overcome the above mentioned drawbacks in the prior art.
Objects of the invention
An object of the present invention is to provide a pneumatic system for picking up washers from packaging and placing them in a pin storage tray, without manual handling of washers.

Summary of the invention
In one aspect, the present invention provides a washer handling system, which is a pneumatic system for picking up the washers from a packaging and placing them in a pin storage tray. The system is used for handling washers used in the oil lines of diesel engines. Stacks of washers are packed in a tablet packing. A collared hollow rubber bush with outer diameter less than the washer inner diameter is inserted in the stack of copper washers kept in tablet packing. Pressurized air is filled inside bush causing it to expand. The expanded rubber exerts a gripping force on washers. Entire stack of washers is lifted out of tablet packing & unloaded on pins of storage tray by deflating rubber bush.
In another aspect, the present invention provides a method for handling washers, in particular, a method for picking up washers from packing tray and placing them in a storage tray. The tablet packing with stacks of washers is kept on a stand and a type of storage tray suitable for the type of washers is selected. Then a hollow inflatable rubber bush having an inner diameter less than the washer is inserted into the female coupling member of the coupling unit. The hollow inflatable rubber bush is inserted into the stack of washers and the air pressure is adjusted according to the type of rubber bush. The inflated rubber bush along with the stack of washers gripped thereon is lifted and aligned with the storage pin. The air supply is then cut off allowing the inflated rubber bush to deflate and transfer the washers on to the storage pin. The steps are repeated till all the stacks of washers are transferred to the storage tray.
