Wrist Watch With A Combination Of Digital And Analog Display

Abstract: ABSTRACT A dual time wristwatch is generally preferred over a normal wristwatch by globetrotters who are normally changing time zones more frequently. While the number of time zones that can be depicted is limited as far as the analogue display is concerned owing to the mechanical parts involved, displaying time across numerous time zones is a fairly easy task when it comes to a digital display However, the digital display has the greatest disadvantage of aesthetics due to the inherent constraints with a liquid crystal display which is the only form of digital display available to be used with a device like the wristwatch. On the other hand, a combination of both analogue and digital displays is possible and commonly seen in certain type of wristwatches but the display appears cluttered. This form of display also has the disadvantage that portions of the liquid crystal display are covered due to the passage of hands over them. The present invention overcomes both the constraints explained above viz; poor aesthetics of the liquid crystal display and cluttering of display by the provision of an analogue display integrated into a cover over the liquid crystal display. Judicious selection and combination of the analogue and digital displays keeps thickness at a bare minimum though the displays are placed one over the other.

Specification

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION:
The invention described herein relates to a quartz wristwatch with two different displays - the top one and the more obvious one showing an analog display and the second one showing a digital display. The analog and digital displays can function independently since they are supported by two separate movements. The analog display at the top is locked using a ball catch or magnetic locking mechanism which can be snapped open to read time shown in the digital display. The digital display portion of the dual time wristwatch is also multifunctional with a world time, 3 separate alarm settings that can be set to 3 different time zones, a countdown timer and a chronograph.
FULL PRIOR ART DETAILS
The combination electronic watch described in patent reference US6122226 provides a digital watch and an analogue watch integrally combined into a single unit. The multiple display timepiece of patent reference WO/1997/001134 describes a timepiece with an analog display and a digital display provided within the face of the watch. In the above two kinds of watches the display is cluttered. The invention described in US6122226 has the added disadvantage that characters on the digital display are partially hidden when the hands pass above it.
The patent reference US6633510 explains the invention of a dual time watch with 'ante meridian' or 'post meridian' indication through a window or with the help of liquid crystal display panels that change colour. With this method, a visual indication of’ ante meridian' or 'post meridian' in the 2 different time zones is made possible. However, choice of colors on the face of a watch is limited to the colors possible with the liquid crystal display panel. Normally, liquid crystal display panels come with a grey or green tinge which is not pleasing to the eyes. Further, the size of a watch along 12 hour / 6 hour axis is higher due to the use of 2 separate movements for indicating time related to 2 time zones.
The patent reference US20070201316 describes a wristwatch structure that has 2 dials -one fitted with hands moving in the clockwise direction and another fitted with hands moving in the anticlockwise direction. This invention can only display time related to one time zone.
In the present invention described herein, since the analogue display is a separate entity mounted over a digital display, there is no cluttering of the display. This also provides for a clear view of the digital display area when the cover containing the analogue display is snapped open. Various options are available to the wearer of the watch in terms of colors possible on the dial used for the analogue display which is normally seen outside. Size of the watch is not a constraint since the analogue display is mounted over the digital movement. Though there is an increase in thickness, this is not abnormally high due to the design. Different options are available in terms of the choice of features that can be embedded into the digital display, for e.g. illumination of the display, alarm.

OBJECTIVES OF THE INVENTION
Main object of the invention is to provide a dual time wristwatch where the analog and digital faces are fitted one below the other that will have an analogue display with options of colour / finish, and a digital display showing time along with additional features like world time (time in 24 cities of the world), independent alarm setting for 3 different time zones, calendar, chronograph and a countdown timer.
STATEMENT OF INVENTION:
This invention provides a dual time wristwatch with an analog face that is always available to the wearer to read time having choice of colour / finish of dial, and a digital display with additional features which can be seen when the cover consisting of the analog display is snapped open.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWING
FIG. 1 shows a three dimensional image of the dual time wristwatch with the analog display (I) on the top of the digital display (2).
FIG. 2 shows the digital display panel with world time indication. The city indication (3) is shown with the display of three alphabets below which the time corresponding to the city (4) is displayed. The home time (5) is displayed at the bottom.
FIG. 3 shows the method of attachment of the top analog panel with the digital display. A pin is used to connect the bottom digital face with the analog portion of the watch.
WE CLAIM
01) A dual time wristwatch having cover in the form of an analogue display also has a
digital display attached underneath, which can be seen only when the cover
containing the analog display is snapped open.
02) A dual time wristwatch as claimed in claim 1 has a digital display portion with
additional features like world time (time in 24 cities of the world), independent
alarm setting for 3 different time zones, calendar, chronograph and a countdown
timer.
03) A dual time wristwatch as claimed in claim 1 to 2 has an analogue portion which is
attached to the base and can be snapped open with minimum effort to show a digital
display.
04) A dual time wristwatch as claimed in claim 1 to 3 has the analogue and digital
displays both encased in separate water resistant housings and well protected from
dust.
05) A dual time wristwatch as claimed in claim 1 to 4 allows the wearer to choose
different colours and finish on the analogue watch face that is seen outside.
