This board is used to play chess for four players comprising of two teams. That is, each team will have two members. The members are designated as main attacker and supporter. All the four players will get their own coins and they can play only with that coins. The main player"s coins are like normal chess which includes 8 pawns, 2 rooks 2 knights, 2 bishops, one queen and one king of their colours. Supporter"s pieces are 4 pawns, two Rooks and one each of Bishop and Knight and the colours will be slightly lighter than with their main partner.Attraction of this is that, the main player will get a support from the team mate while playing, even though he/she can play only with his/her coins. This will help the team spirit of individuals where the movements of each ones will decide the end result. First move will be by white main player followed by black main player. After black main player makes a move, turn goes to white supporter and then black supporter. The turn again continues from white main player and continues by other players. The game will end when the king has been captured, that is checkmated, or with a draw.
Description
Yoke Chess Board
It is a variant of normal chess. Usually chess is considered as an individual game, though variations are available where a team can play. Yoke chess board is designed to four player chess game. Here two players will be designated as main players who will compete each other and another two players are designated as their supporters. That means each main player will get a support player. Support player can play only his/her coins and once all the coins have been captured by the opponent or lost they are out from the game and the main player has to play alone with his opponent and the opponent's supporter. First move will be by white main player followed by black main player. After black main player makes a move, turn goes to white supporter and then black supporter. The turn again continues from white main player and so on.
1) Yoke Chessboard
Yoke Chessboard consist of 8* 12 rows and columns.
2) How to Setup the Chessboard
At the beginning of the game the chessboard is laid out so that each team has the white (or light) colour square in the bottom right-hand side. The chess pieces are then arranged the same way each time. The second row (or rank) is filled with pawns. A to H in the first row are arranged as per the normal chess, that is ,the rooks go in the corners, then the knights next to them, followed by the bishops, and finally the queen, who always goes on her own matching colour (white queen on white, black queen on black), and the king on the remaining square. From I to L, supporter pieces are placed. In two rooks are placed as follows
I Rook
J : Bishop J
K Knight
L Rook
The white supporter player coin colours will be slightly lighter than main white and black supporter player coin colours will be slightly lighter than main black.
3) How the Chess Pieces Move
Each of the 6 different kinds of pieces moves differently. Pieces cannot move through other pieces (though the knight can jump over other pieces), and can never move onto a square with one of their own pieces. However, they can be moved to take the place of an opponent's piece which is then captured. Pieces are generally moved into positions where they can capture other pieces (by landing on their square and then replacing them), defend their own pieces in case of capture, or control important squares in the game.
How to Move the King in Chess
The king is the most important piece, but is one of the weakest. The king can only move one square in any direction - up, down, to the sides, and diagonally. The king may never move himself into check (where he could be captured). When the king is attacked by another piece this is called "check".
How to Move the Queen in Chess
The queen moves any number of vacant squares horizontally, vertically, or diagonally.
How to Move the Rook in Chess
The rook may move as far as it wants, but only forward, backward, and to the sides. The rooks are particularly powerful pieces when they are protecting each other and working together)
How to Move the Bishop in Chess
The bishop may move as far as it wants, but only diagonally. Each bishop starts on one colour (light or dark) and must always stay on that colour. Bishops work well together because they cover up each other's weaknesses.
How to Move the Knight in Chess
Knights move in a very different way from the other pieces - going two squares in one direction, and then one more move at a 90 degree angle, just like the shape of an "L". Knights are also the only pieces that can move over other pieces.
How to Move the Pawn in Chess
Pawns are unusual because they move and capture in different ways: they move forward, but capture diagonally. Pawns can only move forward one square at a time, except for their very first move where they can move forward two squares. Pawns can only capture one square diagonally in front of them. They can never move or capture backwards. If there is another piece directly in front of a pawn he cannot move past or capture that piece.
How to Promote a Pawn in Chess
Pawns have another special ability and that is that if a pawn reaches the other side of the board it can become any other chess piece (called promotion). A pawn may be promoted to any piece for a player and restricted to rook , bishop, or knight for the supporter.
How to do "en passant" in Chess
The last rule about pawns is called "en passant," which is French for "in passing". If a pawn moves out two squares on its first move, and by doing so lands to the side of an opponent's pawn (effectively jumping past the other pawn's ability to capture it), that other pawn has the option of capturing the first pawn as it passes by. This special move must be done immediately after the first pawn has moved past, otherwise the option to capture it is no longer available
How to Castle in Chess
Castling is provided only for the main player not for the supporter.
One other special chess rule is called castling. This move allows you to do two important things all in one move: get your king to safety (hopefully), and get your rook out of the corner and into the game. On a player's turn he may move his king two squares over to one side and then move the rook from that side's corner to right next to the king on the opposite side.
However, in order to castle, the following conditions must be met:
> it must be that king's very first move
> it must be that rook's very first move
> there cannot be any pieces between the king and rook to move
> the king may not be in check or pass through check
4) Find out Who Makes the First Move in Chess
In Yoke chess the first move is decided by toss. Winner of the toss will get white colour andstart the game.
5) Review the Rules of How to Win a Game of Chess
There are two ways to end a yoke chess: when the king has been captured, that is checkmated, or with a draw.If a player's king is placed in check and there is no legal move that player can make to escape check, then the king is said to be checkmated, the game ends, and that player loses
6) Impact of Yoke Chess Board
Usually chess will be played between two individuals and considered as individual event. But Yoke Chess Board is designed for team play. Through the participation in a team play, one can learn skills like dedication, commitment, problem-solving, and an understanding of teammates which leads to good results. And also they learn the leadership skill well because the strength of a team will be the strength of the weakest player in that team and to make the team stronger they have to support others. Apart from the normal team play benefits, here in Yoke chess they have to understand or find out what their counter part is expected to play or thinking. This gives them resemblance or synchronized thinking capacity. This makes Yoke chess more interesting and challenging compared to normal chess.
Here, winnability is not only depended on individual skills and memory power but also based on the understanding of their support player. Once a player makes a move their next turn will happen only after 3 moves, two opponent's moves and one partner move. This demands a player to have more critical thinking capacity and broad view on the game plan. \n normal chess there are 16 pieces for attack but here one have to face attack by 28 pieces even though you have 8 more pieces for additional support.
At the same time, when one is tired of fighting or not even competent with the opponent, can still win the game by the support of their counter partner player. This makes the game more team oriented.
