A polymer substrate functionalized with a functionality comprising at least one cyclic, metal ion coordinating ligand group, the cyclic ligand group comprising at least 3 metal ion coordinating donor atoms independently selected from the group consisting of N, O and S. The macrocydic ligand is positioned as a “puckered” face of the metal ion coordination sphere leading to an uni-directional approach and orientation for the incoming oligopeptide “tag” of a “tagged” protein (fusion protein). The polymer substrate serves a matrix in the field of isolation and purification of peptides by means of immobilized metal ion affinity cromatography.
