Description:TECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION:
The present invention relates to botanical based soil conditioner with bio-stimulant activity useful for improving soil health and enhancing plant growth. More specifically, the present invention relates to botanical based soil conditioner with bio-stimulant activity useful for improving soil health and enhancing plant growth and comprising natural plant extracts such as sea weed and other plant extracts loaded on a natural carrier. The present invention also relates to process for preparation of said soil conditioner.

BACKGROUND AND PRIOR ART:

Conventional agriculture practice, which mainly relies on fertilisers and pesticides, has made a significant contribution to satisfying global food demands, but at the cost of soil degradation, increasing salt concentration, decreasing soil fertility, disturbing soil rhizosphere crop yield, and soil ecosystem. Soil’s physical constraints, such as surface crusting and hardening, subsurface hard pan and compactness, high or slow permeability and extremes of consistency, soil water-related constraints, wind and water erosion, and so on, can all be attributed to a significant reduction in their production capacity. This assumes that in order to increase crop yield, soil must be kept in such physical condition that appropriate crop development can occur. Without a doubt, if soils are correctly managed for physical health, the yield potential of many crops can be greatly boosted. We can consider using organic and inorganic soil conditioners and additives to improve agricultural land and increase productivity as a means of increasing production.

Soil conditioning is any technique that improves a soil's potential to boost crop yields or improves the performance of a soil for any function, and any product used in soil conditioning is a soil conditioner. Soil Conditioners are any material(s) containing modest levels of nutrients but are handled largely for their favourable impact on the biological, physical, or chemical composition of the soil. Soil conditioning entails the production and stabilisation of soil aggregates favourable to seed germination and seedling emergence. A competent soil stabiliser for such functions will protect aggregates from disintegration caused by raindrop impact while retaining a high-water penetration capacity. Many organic compounds, gypsum, lime, natural deposits, various water-soluble polymers and cross-linked polymers that hold water in soil, live plants, microorganisms, many industrial waste products, and others are considered soil conditioners.

A soil conditioner, also known as a soil amendment, is a material that is applied to soil to enhance plant growth and health. The type of conditioner utilised is influenced by the current soil composition, climate, and plant species. Some soils lack nutrients necessary for optimal plant growth, while others store excessive or inadequate water. A conditioner, or a combination of conditioners, alters the soil's nutrient inadequacies.

Nowadays, there is an abundance of fertilisers and a greater emphasis on chemical inputs, but soil conditioners and soil amendments are sometimes overlooked. Conditioning soil is necessary for a variety of reasons. Controlling soil degradation is a critical necessity, as is improving soil air-water relations, drainage, and aggregation; reducing soil crusting and compaction, overcoming water repellence, and so on.

As a result, establishing sustainable concepts, strategies, technical improvements, and innovations is critical to increasing fertiliser efficacy, meeting the criteria of ecologically friendly crop management practises, and meeting high production expectations. Crop resilience to diseases, soil salinity, drought, heavy metals, and higher nutritional value are all becoming increasingly desirable.

Bio-based objects (including crop left over, plants, and seaweed) applied at low doses may be a potential alternative for reducing fertiliser rates while still improving plant development and most importantly as soil conditioner. Because of their beneficial characteristics, bio stimulants have grown more popular in sustainable agriculture in recent years.

They stimulate various physiological processes that promote nutrient acquisition and utilisation by plants, improve root development (the length and number of root hairs), shoot development, yield, and nutritional quality of plants, counteract the effects of biotic and abiotic stresses, improve the activity of soil microbes, and reduce the use of fertilisers and the content of undesirable compounds (e.g., nitrates and heavy metals) in cultivated plants. The effects of bio stimulants vary depending on plant species, cultivar, physiological phases, kind of substance, dose, concentration, time, and application method (e.g., foliar, soil drench, or seed treatment), as well as environmental and soil conditions.

Soil conditioner compounds are disclosed in the following patents/patent applications.
US5125950 discloses a soil conditioner composed of a soil suitable electrolyte such as sodium acetate and an invert sugar with a degree of inversion ranging from about 55% to about 75% in a weight-to-weight ratio of 20:1 to 1:10.

US6752850 discloses a liquid soil conditioning compound containing an aqueous dispersion of calcium carbonate and sulphur. Calcium and sulphur are present in sufficient quantities in the aqueous dispersion to produce calcium sulphate in situ in the soil structure, with the atomic ratio of calcium to sulphur ranging from 0.5:1 to 2.0:1.

US5779789 discloses a pellet-shaped soil conditioner containing at least 50% silica by weight and at least 20% alumina by weight, with a porosity of at least 40% by volume. In addition, the soil conditioner comprises 2-3.3% CaO, 2.9-3.4% MgO, and 7-9% FeO by weight.

US5578121 discloses a freely fiowable soil conditioner comprised of granular perlite with an unfired clay coating on the perlite grains' externally exposed surface.

US20030041639 discloses a soil conditioner containing a soil-tolerant electrolyte and sugar, the soil conditioner being a mixture of a first aqueous solution comprising sodium hydroxide, acetic acid, and 1,2,3-propanetriol produced under constant stirring and a second aqueous solution comprising saccharose, acetic acid, and potassium hydrogen tartrate produced under constant stirring.

US20040089042 discloses a potting soil and topsoil conditioning composition containing at least about 50% by volume of organic compost; at least about 5% by volume of sandy loam; at least about 5% by volume of a diatomaceous earth component containing diatomaceous earth, Phosphate, Magnesium, Potassium, and Nitrogen; and at minimum about 1% by volume of Perlite in proportions to deliver good plant nutrition, moisture retention, moisture. The structure also comprises sulphur, iron, calcium, copper, and zinc etc.

The soil conditioner formulations disclosed in the prior art do not deliver effective nutrients and minerals required for appropriate plant growth as well as boosting plant product output. Deficiency of minerals required for plants leads to inappropriate growth and numerous diseases in plants.

A need exists in the art to provide improved soil conditioner that caters to the nutritional demands of the plants, reduces the use of chemical fertilizers, are environmentally friendly, and are safe for agriculture and humans.

Hence, the present inventors have come up with an organic soil conditioner which is beneficial to plants and improves soil fertility, water retention, and overall soil structure by utilising natural plant extracts such as seaweed and other plant extracts in small amounts loaded on a natural carrier such as bentonite soil and which is economical, environmentally friendly and simple to produce and utilize.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION:

The invention will now be described in detail in connection with certain preferred and
optional embodiments, so that various aspects thereof may be more fully understood and
appreciated.

Seaweed extracts show presence of high concentration of bioactive chemicals, and thus seaweed extracts have been utilised for decades as soil conditioners or plant stimulators to boost the productivity of agronomic and horticultural crops. Some treatments are direct, while others are aimed at increasing nutrient availability in the soil. This is because plants only take nutrients through their leaf surfaces and roots. Seaweeds also include a variety of energy minerals and chemical compounds, such as complex polysaccharides including laminarin, fucoidan, alginates, and plant hormones that promote plant growth.

Seaweed extracts have been shown to increase crop yields, uptake of inorganic soil nutrients and resistance to pests and environmental stress conditions. Seaweed extracts also reduce fruit losses during storage and increase their reproductive capacity.

Bentonite is a naturally occurring soil amendment that is abundant in India. Because of its excellent adsorption capabilities, bentonite is now widely utilised for adsorbing metal ions and dye, disposing of radioactive wastes, and cleaning viral RNA and waste water. Furthermore, its usage as a soil amendment could be a viable solution to some of the agronomic/environmental issues associated with drought stress and soil degradation in agricultural systems. Bentonite has been widely investigated and proven to boost soil moisture and water storage, increase millet production, and improve water usage efficiency other research has found that adding clay as a soil supplement to sandy soil can improve soil accessible water, organic carbon, and potassium, as well as increase crop emergence and yield. This was related to increased soil aggregation, which improves soil porosity, soil water-holding capacity, soil fertility, and crop growth.
