Abstract: ABSTRACT A spark plug 100 is described. The spark plug 100 comprises a housing 110, and a spark plug electrode 130 positioned within the housing 110. The housing 110 of the spark plug 100 comprises an elliptically shaped profile 140 and spaced from the spark plug electrode 130. The elliptically shaped profile 140 of the housing 110 of the spark plug 100 increases a spark gap 160 between the housing 110 and the spark plug electrode 130. The elliptically shaped profile 140 of the housing 110 of the spark plug 100 forms a tangential surface 150 with the housing 110 of the spark plug 100. A displacement of the spark gap 160 increases exponentially along a longitudinal length of the spark plug 100 from a portion defined in the housing 110 until a portion proximate to an end of the housing 110 of the spark plug 100.
Description:Complete Specification
The following specification describes and ascertains the nature of this invention and the manner in which it is to be performed.
Field of the invention
[0001] This invention relates to a spark plug, and more specifically to an inner bore housing geometry of the spark plug.
Background of the invention
[0002] WO 22090031 A1 describes an invention that relates to a pre-chamber spark plug having a housing, a cap, which is arranged on the combustion-chamber end of the housing and forms a pre-chamber together with the housing, an insulator, which is arranged within the housing, a central electrode, which is arranged within the insulator, and a ground electrode, wherein the ground electrode and the central electrode are arranged so as to form an ignition gap in the pre-chamber. The invention is characterized in that the cap is secured to the housing by at least two welding seams which are offset to each other in the longitudinal direction and overlap in the longitudinal direction and which encircle the pre-chamber spark plug.
Brief description of the accompanying drawing
[0003] Figure 1 illustrates a drawing depicting a spark plug that is housed within an elliptically shaped inner bore housing geometry in one embodiment of the invention.
Detailed description of the embodiments
[0004] Figure 1 illustrates a spark plug 100. The spark plug 100 comprises a housing 110, and a spark plug electrode 130 positioned within the housing 110 of the spark plug 100. The housing 110 of the spark plug 100 comprises an elliptically shaped profile 140 and spaced from the spark plug electrode 130, wherein the elliptically shaped profile 140 of the housing 110 of the spark plug 100 increases a spark gap 160 between the housing 110 and the spark plug electrode 130. The elliptically shaped profile 140 of the housing 110 of the spark plug 100 forms a tangential surface 150 with the housing 110 of the spark plug 100 to ensure a smooth increase in the spark gap 160 between the housing 110 and the spark plug electrode 130. A displacement of the spark gap 160 increases exponentially along a longitudinal length of the spark plug 100 from a portion defined in the housing 110 of the spark plug 100 until a portion proximate to an end of the housing 110 of the spark plug 100 that is proximate to an end of the spark plug electrode 130.
[0005] Figure 1 illustrates a spark plug 100. The spark plug 100 comprises a housing 110. In an exemplary embodiment, a spark plug electrode 130 is positioned within the housing 110 of the spark plug 100. The housing 110 of the spark plug 100 comprises an elliptically shaped profile 140, wherein the elliptically shaped profile 140 is spaced apart from the spark plug electrode 130. More specifically, the elliptically shaped profile 140 of the housing 110 of the spark plug 100 increases a spark gap 160 between the housing 110 and the spark plug electrode 130. Therefore, the spark from the spark plug electrode 130 cannot penetrate the gap between the spark plug electrode 130 and the housing 110 of the spark plug 100 and create a puncture in the housing 110 of the spark plug 100. In an exemplary embodiment, the elliptically shaped profile 140 of the housing 110 of the spark plug 100 forms a tangential surface 150 with the housing 110 of the spark plug 100. The tangential surface 150 that is formed with the housing 110 of the spark plug 100 ensures that there exists a smooth increase in the spark gap 160 between the housing 110 and the spark plug electrode 130.
[0006] In an exemplary embodiment, a displacement of the spark gap 160 increases exponentially along a longitudinal length of the spark plug 100. More specifically, the displacement of the spark gap 160 increases from a portion defined in the housing 110 of the spark plug 100 until a portion proximate to an end of the housing 110 of the spark plug 100 that is proximate to an end of the spark plug electrode 130.
[0007] It must be understood that the embodiments explained above are only illustrative and do not limit the scope of the disclosure. Many modifications in the embodiments with regard to dimensions of various components are envisaged and form a part of this invention. The scope of the invention is only limited by the scope of the claims.
