Specification

Description:Complete specification: The following specification particularly describes the invention and the manner in which it is to be performed.

Field of the invention:
[0001] The present disclosure relates to a supply module of a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system, and particularly to a housing cover of a supply module of a SCR system.

Background of the invention:
[0002] NOx gases, harmful to the environment are emitted by the exhaust of modern vehicles. It is essential to reduce the emission of these NOx gases. A selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system is implemented in vehicles to reduce the NOx gases emission. A SCR system includes a storage tank, a supply module, a dosing module, an exhaust gas path, and a few sensors. AdBlue is a water-based ammonia solution used to reduce the emission of NOx gases. The AdBlue solution in a vehicle is dosed by a SCR system. This AdBlue solution flows through the supply module, the dosing module, and the exhaust gas path.
[0003] The SCR system is implemented in both passenger and non-passenger vehicles. The implementation of SCR system in both types of above-mentioned vehicles differs. For a passenger vehicle, the supply module of the SCR system is installed within the storage tank, whereas in the case of a non-passenger vehicle or a commercial vehicle, the supply module is affixed external to the storage tank.
[0004] As known in the state of the art, the supply module of a SCR system for a non-passenger vehicle or a commercial vehicle is predominantly located outside the AdBlue storage tank. Hence, the supply module of the SCR system is exposed to the outside environment. Therefore, it is essential to enclose the supply module with a housing cover to protect it from dirt, mud or water originating from the outside environment. A pressure compensation element is installed in the housing cover of the supply module. The pressure compensation element is used to equalize the pressure within the supply module to that of the surrounding atmosphere. A pressure compensation element region is a region surrounding the pressure compensation element. When dirt, mud, or water droplets accumulate on the pressure compensation element region it compromises the pressure compensation element by obstructing it. This obstruction leads to the malfunctioning of the supply module of the SCR system.
[0005] The present invention solves this problem of pressure compensation element compromised due to dirt, mud or water droplets from outside environment obstructing the pressure compensation element region.

Brief description of the accompanying drawings:
[0006] Fig 1 illustrates a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system of a vehicle.
[0007] Fig 2 illustrates top view of a housing cover of a supply module of a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system.
[0008] Fig 3 illustrates top view of a portion of a housing cover.

Detailed description of the embodiments:
[0009] The Figure 1 illustrates a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system (7). The SCR system (7) comprises a storage tank (9), a supply module (2), a dosing module (10), and an exhaust gas path (17). It also comprises some sensors like a NOx sensor (11) or a multi-gas sensor (11), a particulate matter sensor (12), a differential pressure sensor (13) and an exhaust-gas temperature sensor (14).
[0010] The storage tank (9) further contains an AdBlue (18) solution. The storage tank (9) is connected to the supply module (2) via an inlet pipe (16).
[0011] The supply module (2) delivers the AdBlue (18) with a required pressure into the dosing module (10) via an outlet pipe (15). The supply module (2) comprises a pumping module (8) and atleast a housing cover (1) amongst other components known to a person skilled in the art.
[0012] The dosing module (10) ensures that a right quantity of AdBlue (18) is dosed into the exhaust gas path (17). In purging mode, the AdBlue (18) is sucked from the dosing module (10) into the supply module (2) and then finally into the storage tank (9).
[0013] The NOx sensor (11) or multi-gas sensor (11) is used to measure the level of NOx gases in the SCR system (7). This measurement is further used in regulating the dosed quantity of urea.
[0014] The particulate matter sensor (12) is used to monitor the functioning of the diesel particle filter which further helps reducing the particulate emissions by the vehicle. The differential pressure sensor (13) measures the pressure drop across the diesel particle filter and the exhaust gas temperature sensor (14). The exhaust gas temperature sensor (14) monitors the temperature of the exhaust gas.
[0015] In the present SCR system (7), the supply module (2) is located outside the storage tank (9). Hence, it is exposed to the external environment. It is mainly called a double injection selective catalytic reduction system (7) for commercial vehicles.
[0016] The pumping module (8) consists of a pump and a valve module. The AdBlue (18) is sucked from the storage tank (9) due to the suction stroke of one the valves in the valve module. The suction is due to the vacuum created by the motor inside the pump. After the AdBlue (18) is sucked, it is delivered to the dosing module (10) by the delivery stroke of another valve of the valve module.
[0017] The housing cover (1) acts as a protective cover for the pumping module (8). The housing cover (1) comprises a pressure compensation element (3) and a pressure compensation element region (4) as illustrated in figure 3.
[0018] The figure 2 describes the housing cover (1) of a supply module (2). The housing cover (1) of a supply module (2) comprises a pressure compensation element (3) fitted on the said housing cover (1), a pressure compensation element region (4) surrounding the pressure compensation element (3), characterized in that a drain channel (5) extending from the pressure compensation element region (4) to a drain area (6) where the said drain channel (5) is in flow communication with the drain area (6). The drain area (6) facilitates to expel any mud, dirt or water accumulated on the pressure compensation element region (4) by draining it through the drain channel (5). The said drain area (6) has an outlet exposed to external environment outside the vehicle.
[0019] An embodiment of the present invention discloses a supply module (2) of a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system (7). The said supply module (2) comprises a pumping module (8), a housing cover (1) enclosing the pumping module (8) wherein the said housing cover (1) further comprises a pressure compensation element (3) fitted on the housing cover (1) and a pressure compensation element region (4) surrounding the pressure compensation element, characterized in that a drain channel (5) extending from the pressure compensation element region (4) in a flow communication with a drain area (6). The drain area (6) facilitates to expel any mud, dirt or water accumulated on the pressure compensation element region (4) by draining it through the drain channel (5). The said drain area (6) has an outlet exposed to external environment outside the vehicle.
[0020] Another embodiment of the invention discloses a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system (7) of a vehicle comprising a storage tank (9), a dosing module (10), a supply module (2), characterized in that: the supply module (2) comprising a pumping module (8) and a housing cover (1) enclosing the pumping module (8), the said housing cover (1) further comprising a pressure compensation element region (4) surrounding a pressure compensation element (3) fitted on the housing cover (1) and a drain channel (5) extending from the pressure compensation element region (4) in flow communication with a drain area (6). The drain area (6) facilitates to expel any mud, dirt or water accumulated on the pressure compensation element region (4) by draining it through the drain channel (5). The said drain area (6) has an outlet exposed to external environment outside the vehicle.
[0021] The drain channel (5) by being in flow communication with the drain area (6) protects the pressure compensation element (3) from getting clogged by means of mud, dirt, or water droplets from the exposure of the supply module (2) to the external environment.
[0022] It should be understood that embodiments explained in the description above are only illustrative and do not limit the scope of this invention.
