Abstract: The present invention relates to universal coating remover composition for removing one or more coats of paints, enamels, lacquers, varnish, and such coatings from metallic and non-metallic surfaces in which said composition is free from chlorinated solvents and chlorinated derivatives.
WE CLAIM:
1. A universal coating remover composition for removing one or more coats from
metallic and non-metallic surfaces and comprising –
5 a) at least one dibasic ester of C4-C6 selected from dimethyl adipate,
dimethyl succinate, n-butyl propionate, di-methyl adipate, di-methyl
malonate, n-butyl acetate and dimethyl glutarate;
b) N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone
c) at least one alkaline media;
10 such that said composition is free from chlorinated solvents and chlorinated
derivatives.
2. The universal coating remover composition for removing one or more coats
from metallic and non-metallic surfaces as claimed in claim 1 wherein the
15 concentration of dibasic esters of C4-C6 in the composition is about 30-
55%w/v.
3. The universal coating remover composition for removing one or more coats
from metallic and non-metallic surfaces as claimed in any of the preceding
20 claims wherein the alkaline media c) is selected from at least one of
triethanolamine, l-Arginine, tetra-hydroxy-propyl-ethylenediamine, potassium
hydroxide, sodium hydroxide and benzyl alcohol in about 4-9%w/v of the total
formulation.
25 4. The universal coating remover composition for removing one or more coats
from metallic and non-metallic surfaces as claimed in any of the preceding
claims wherein the concentration of N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone is about 36-
55%w/v.
30 5. The universal coating remover composition for removing one or more coats
from metallic and non-metallic surfaces as claimed in any of the preceding
claims wherein the preferred synergistic ratio of dibasic ester: N-methyl-2-
pyrrolidone is ranging between 1:0.5 – 1:1.92.
19
6. The universal coating remover composition for removing one or more coats
from metallic and non-metallic surfaces as claimed in any of the preceding
claims wherein the composition is a gel or a liquid formulation and comprises
at least one cellulosic rheology modifier selected from methyl cellulose, fumed
5 silica and hydroxypropyl cellulo
