Description:FIELD OF INVENTION:
The present invention generally relates to predictive dermatological assessment. More particularly, the present invention relates to a pregnancy stretch mark assessment device and method, to enable healthcare professionals and individuals to make informed decisions regarding proactive management and prevention strategies on pregnancy stretch marks.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION:
Skin, also known as cutis, is the largest organ in the body, and serves as a vital protective barrier covering the entire external surface of the body. The skin integrity is crucial for safeguarding against external aggressors while maintaining bodily functions. The skin comprises of three distinct layers: epidermis (top layer), dermis (middle layer), and hypodermis also known as subcutaneous layer (bottom layer). The said dermis is a layer of connective tissues containing elastic fibers, that help the skin to return to its normal shape after being stretched. As such due to its elasticity and resilience, the dermis plays a vital role in allowing the skin to retain its shape and structural integrity.
Striae gravidarum (SG), widely recognized as stretch marks, is a common skin condition prevalent during pregnancy. Scientifically these marks emerge within the dermis due to extended skin stretching, often linked to pregnancy. Over time, the natural elasticity in the dermis diminishes, causing the breakdown of connective fibers, which results in visible striations on the skin. Initially the marks appear as raised pink, reddish-brown, or dark brown lines, these marks signify the onset of stretch marks. While SG is typically asymptomatic, its effects can vary significantly among women, causing stress and aesthetic or cosmetic concerns. Further, research indicates that SG can lead to emotional and psychological distress, including embarrassment and reduced Quality of Life (QoL) among women. The studies report a wide prevalence range of SG among pregnant women, spanning from 50% to 90%. The identified risk factors that play a key role for occurrence of SG encompass younger age, maternal and family history of SG, pre-pregnancy weight, increased birth weight, multiple pregnancies, poor nutrition etc.
The newly formed stretch marks initially exhibit characteristics of flattened, thin skin with a pink hue, and often accompanied by itching. However, over time, these marks can increase in length and width, evolving into reddish-purple bands known as striae rubra. The surface of a stretch mark may display fine wrinkles, indicative of its progressive development. Further, with maturity, stretch marks transition to a white depressed state, and assumes irregularly shaped bands aligned parallel to the skin's lines of tension. The matured stretch marks can span several centimeters in length and measure 1-10 mm in width, impacting both the aesthetic appearance and self-esteem of affected individuals.
Additionally, early identification and proactive management strategies initiated during the fourth month of pregnancy can potentially mitigate the severity of stretch marks occurrence. In the context of pregnancy, the fourth month marks a pivotal stage where the skin begins to undergo substantial stretching due to the growth of the foetus. At this juncture, the skin's elasticity is still relatively intact, allowing for a more accurate assessment of factors contributing to the formation of stretch marks. Compared to later stages of pregnancy, such as the fifth month and beyond, where the skin may already exhibit pronounced changes and stretch marks may have already begun to develop, the fourth month presents an opportune window for proactive intervention.
However, there is currently no assessment device or information platform suitable for use in pregnancy stretch mark assessment, to evaluate the likelihood of their development. Further, the physical examination information system used at present by healthcare professionals also lacks comprehensive evaluation and fails to provide a proactive and preventive management strategies.
Thus, recognizing the physical and emotional impact of stretch marks on individuals; there exists a need for effective assessment tools to evaluate the likelihood of their development. Current methods rely on subjective observation and lack a standardized approach for comprehensive evaluation. And thus, there arises a need for innovation in the field of dermatology to provide a reliable and user-friendly solution for assessing the predisposition to pregnancy stretch marks.
The present invention thus discloses a pregnancy stretch mark assessment device and method which enables healthcare professionals and individuals to make informed decisions regarding proactive management and prevention strategies. The said device of the present invention systematically assesses relevant factors including age, body mass index (BMI), family history of stretch mark, and the number of expected babies which contributes to the formation of stretch marks during pregnancy. The present invention thus facilitates a comprehensive assessment of various factors associated with the likelihood of pregnancy stretch marks.

The total score as defined in said Table 1 determines the potential risk or chance of developing pregnancy stretch marks based on the amalgamated factors considered by the device. The user can calculate stretch mark risk level during pregnancy by referring total score as defined in said Table 1. Further, as mentioned in Table.1, the total score of ‘4’ interprets that the individual has nil chance of developing pregnancy stretch marks. The total score between ‘5-9’ interprets that the individual has moderate chance of developing pregnancy stretch marks, and suggests consultation with doctor. The total score more than ‘9’ interprets that the individual has high chances of developing pregnancy stretch marks, and suggests immediate application of anti-stretch mark formulation followed by consultation with doctor.

EXAMPLE:
Sample patient inputs:
• Age during pregnancy: 28 years
• BMI: 19
• Family history of stretch marks: Yes
• Number of expected babies: Single
Following steps can be followed by users, patients, or healthcare professionals or individuals;
1. Rotate the first disc (1) to align with the age range during pregnancy (25-30 years), obtaining a score of ‘2’.
2. Rotate the second disc (2) to select the BMI range (18-20), resulting in a score of ‘1’.
3. Rotate the third disc (3) to specify the presence of a family history of stretch marks, resulting in a score of ‘3’.
4. Rotate the fourth disc (4) to indicate the number of expected babies (Single), obtaining a score of ‘1’.
? Calculating Total Score:
Sum up the above scores obtained from each disc (1,2,3,4): 2 + 1 + 3 + 1 = 7.
? Interpreting the Score:
Referencing Table 1, a score of ‘7’ falls within the range Between 5-9, indicating moderate chances to develop pregnancy stretch marks.
? Recommendation from predefined Table-1:
Based on the interpretation, it is advisable to consider preventive measures to minimize the risk of developing stretch marks during pregnancy. Consult with healthcare provider for further guidance on preventive strategies and suitable anti-stretch mark formulations.
