A Process For Converting Coal To Acetic Acid With Minimal Carbon Emissions

Abstract: The invention presents a novel process for converting high ash Indian coal into acetic acid through methanol carbonylation, aimed at reducing CO2 emissions with minimal release as tail gas. The process involves gasifying the coal using oxygen, carbon dioxide, and steam to produce syngas rich in carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen. Syngas cleaning, high-pressure steam generation, and conditioning for methanol conversion are integral steps in the process. The captured CO2 is electrocatalytically converted, and the syngas is directed through a Rectisol wash process for CO2 and H2S capture. Methanol synthesis, CO2 reduction, and acetic acid production further enhance the efficiency of the process. With a carbon conversion efficiency of approximately 95% and low CO2 emissions per unit of acetic acid production, this invention offers a sustainable and environmentally friendly solution for coal conversion into valuable chemicals.
