Abstract: ABSTRACT ‘A DEVICE FOR HYDRO TESTING OF PIPES & ELBOWS WITHOUT WELDING DUMMY PLATES AT BOTH ENDS OF PIPES & ELBOWS’ This invention focuses on hydro testing of pipes & elbows and provided a device for performing the hydro testing of pipes & elbows without welding the dummy plates at the ends of pipes & elbows. Concentric circular grooved discs are used to close both the ends of pipes/elbows while performing the hydro testing. The discs have circular grooves inside which PTFE glands are placed. Hydro test is carried out by filling water in the pipe through the water inlet line. Water is pressurised gradually till required test pressure is reached. The pressure in hydraulic jack is also increased steadily to avoid water leakage. The hydro test is carried out at required test pressure for required time. The proposed device does not require extra straight length of pipes/elbows. The device can be used to hold pipes of various lengths, diameter, thickness and elbows of various angles and of different radius. FIGURE: 1
DESC:FIELD OF THE INVENTION:
[0001] The present invention relates to a device for hydro testing of pipes without dummy welding at both ends of the pipes. More particularly, the invention relates to an equipment and arrangement to carry out the hydro testing in pipes by using concentric circular grooved discs to accommodate pipes of different length and diameter at both ends of the device and sealed using PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene) gland rope.
[0002] The present invention further relates to a device for hydro testing of elbows without dummy welding at both ends of the elbows. More particularly, the invention relates to an equipment and arrangement to carry out the hydro testing in elbows by using concentric circular grooved discs to accommodate elbows of different radii at both ends of the device and sealed using PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene) gland rope.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION:
[0003] Background description includes information that may be useful in understanding the present invention. It is not an admission that any of the information provided herein is prior art or relevant to the presently claimed invention, or that any publication specifically or implicitly referenced is prior art.
[0004] The piping products require welded pipes & elbows which need hydro testing for conforming to approved quality plan to ensure quality of welding. The hydro testing is carried out by subjecting the weldments of pipes & elbow to test pressure.
[0005] In the conventional hydro testing method, the dummy plate is butt welded at both ends of the pipes/elbows. This process involved a longer cycle time, and it consumes excess pipe lengths that need to be kept after butt-welding of pipes for dummies welding, as well as cutting and edge preparation on both sides of the pipe. After the hydro test, the dummies must be cut on both sides, including the extra length of the pipe. This process takes more time and finally the pipe has to move to prepare the edge preparation once more for the desired dimensions. This leads to less productivity and more resource requirement for doing hydro test on straight pipes, branch pipes and elbows.
[0006] Thus, conventional method for hydro testing of pipes & elbows requires extra straight length of pipe at both ends of pipes and elbow, later which needs to be cut off thereby leads to wastage of material. Also, the dummy plates are welded at both ends and then cut off which consumes time and resources.
[0007] In order to overcome these issues, a new hydraulic device is developed using which pipes of different lengths, diameter & thickness as well as elbows of different angles, outer diameter and different bend radii can be hydro tested without dummy welding. The devices are designed differently for pipes and elbows.
OBJECTS OF THE INVENTION:
[0008] It is therefore an object of present invention to propose hydraulic operated hydro testing device with concentric circular grooved end discs for pipes & elbows.
[0009] Another object of the invention is to provide devices for hydro testing of pipes & elbows, which avoids welding of dummy plates at both ends of pipes and elbows while performing hydro testing and does not require re-chamfering (edge preparation).
[0010] One another object of present invention is to provide devices for hydro testing of pipes & elbows which eliminates the requirement of excess material.
[0011] Yet another object of present invention is to provide devices for hydro testing of pipes & elbows that reduces the human efforts and cycle time in the testing process.
[0012] Still another object of present invention is to provide devices for hydro testing of pipes & elbows that reduce the hydro testing process time and thereby save the machining cost and labour cost.
[0013] Still one another object of present invention is to propose the use of concentric circular grooved discs sealed with PTFE gland during the hydro test process, which enables the use of one dummy plate for different sizes of pipes.
[0014] These and other objects and advantages of the present invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art after a consideration of the following detailed description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings in which a preferred form of the present invention is illustrated.

The trolley (3) is having a lifting eye (17) which may be lifted by the lifting hook (19) to move the concentric circular grooved disc (5) up and down so as to accommodate the pipe (110) during hydro testing. The air from the accommodated pipe (110) is released through the air breather outlet (12) after the pipe (110) is filled with water and thereafter, the air breather (6) is closed using the pin valve (16), so that the hydro testing could be easily performed on the accommodated pipe.
[0052] Figure 5 illustrates the schematic isometric drawing of a device with two hydraulic jacks used for performing hydro-testing of elbows. The device (200) for performing the hydro testing of elbows comprising of a base frame (202); a plurality of vertical plates (204, 204’) attached vertically to the base frame (202); at least one elbow (210) which have the two ends (220, 220’); a plurality of concentric circular grooved discs (206, 208) having Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) glands so as to receive both the ends (220, 220’) of the elbow (210) freely and hold them firmly during hydro testing; a plurality of hydraulic jacks (212, 212’); a clamp (214) is also provided at the centre of the device so as to lock the elbow (210) with the device; a water inlet line; and an air vent line. At least one hydraulic jack (212) is mounted on at least one vertical plate (204) and another hydraulic jack (212’) is mounted on another vertical plate (204’), wherein the concentric circular grooved disc (206) is equipped with the water inlet line and configured to receive the one end (220) of the elbow (210), and the concentric circular grooved disc (208) is equipped with the air vent line and configured to receive another end (220’) of the elbow (210).
[0053] The hydraulic jacks (212, 212’) used in the for performing hydro testing of elbows, are operated at each end (220, 220’) of the elbow (210) respectively, in order to apply force tangentially on the elbow (210) through the concentric circular grooved discs (206, 208) during hydro testing. The hydraulic jacks (212, 212’) are further configured to support and firmly hold the concentric circular grooved discs (206, 208) during hydro testing. The device (200) is configured to hold and test the elbows (210) of different radii and having 90o degree angles. Elbows of less than 90o degree angles can be accommodated in this device by using suitable angular spool pieces between hydraulic jacks (212, 212’) and concentric circular grooved discs (206, 208) at each end.
[0054] According to the present invention, a device cum fixture is developed to carry out hydro test of pipes without dummy welding. Two concentric circular grooved discs are used to close both the ends of pipe while performing the hydro testing. The discs have circular grooves inside which Polytetrafluoroethylene PTFE glands are placed. The circular groove is made such that the pipe being hydro tested gets easily inserted in the discs. One disc is fixed at one end of the fixture through which water is filled from filling line of pump. The second disc is equipped with an air vent line and is placed on a movable trolley between hydraulic jack and pipe. The hydraulic jack is operated to push the discs firmly against both ends of pipe. The hydraulic jack is used in the fixture to support and hold the concentric grooved discs during hydro testing of pipes.
[0055] Thus, the present invention proposes a device/fixture to hold pipes of various lengths, diameter and thickness. This invention uses grooved dummy flanges. The size (Nominal Diameter & Thickness) of the groove is such that the pipe gets freely inserted inside dummy grooved disc. The disc at one end of pipe has provision to fill water during hydro testing. The disc at other end of pipe has an air vent. The fixture has a base frame and two welded vertical plates. Hydraulic jack is mounted on one vertical plate at one end as shown in figures. Disc through which water is filled is mounted on another vertical plate at other end of the device. Hydro test is carried out by filling water through the provision given in the disc equipped with water inlet line. After filling the water in the pipe and confirming that no air is trapped inside pipe, the air vent in other dummy plate is closed by a valve. Water is pressurised to do required hydro test pressure and hydro test is completed.
[0056] Further, another device cum fixture is developed to carry out the hydro testing of elbows without dummy welding. Two concentric circular grooved discs are used to close both ends of the elbow while performing hydro testing. The discs have circular grooves inside which Polytetrafluoroethylene PTFE glands are placed. The circular groove is made such that the elbow being hydro tested gets inserted easily in the discs. One disc is fixed at one end of the device through which water is filled from filling line of pump. The second disc is fixed on other end of elbow and is equipped with an air vent line. Two hydraulic jacks are operated, one at each end of elbow to push the discs firmly against both ends of elbow. Water is filled inside elbow for conducting hydro-test and pressure is increased gradually till required test pressure is reached. The pressure in hydraulic jack is also increased steadily to avoid water leakage. The hydro test is carried out at required test pressure for required time. Two hydraulic jacks are used in the fixture to support and hold the concentric grooved discs hydro testing of elbows.
[0057] Thus, this invention involves a device/fixture to hold elbows of different angles and of different radii. This invention uses grooved dummy flanges. The size (Nominal Diameter & Thickness) of the groove is such that the elbow gets freely inserted inside the discs. The disc at one end of elbow has provision to fill water during hydro test. The disc at another end of elbow has an air vent. The device has a base frame and two welded vertical plates. Hydraulic jacks are mounted on these vertical plates as shown in figure 5. Hydraulic jacks are used to apply the force tangentially on the elbow through discs. To ensure that the elbow is safely locked in fixture, a clamp is provided in the fixture to hold the elbow at centre. Hydro test is carried out by filling the water through the provision given in one disc. After filling up the water, the air vent in another disc is closed by a valve. Water is pressurised to do required hydro test pressure and hydro test is completed.

WORKING OF THE INVENTION
[0059] The present invention proposes a device for performing the hydro testing of pipes without dummy welding. Two concentric circular grooved discs are used to close both the ends of pipe while performing the hydro testing. The discs have circular grooves inside which PTFE glands are placed. Hydro test is carried out by filling water in the pipe through the provision given in the disc equipped with water inlet line. After filling the water in the pipe and confirming that no air is trapped inside pipe, the air vent in other dummy plate is closed by a valve. Water is pressurised gradually till required test pressure is reached. The pressure in hydraulic jack is also increased steadily to avoid water leakage. The hydro test is carried out at required test pressure for required time.
[0060] The present invention further proposes a device for performing the hydro testing of elbows without dummy welding. Two concentric circular grooved discs are used to close both ends of the elbow while performing hydro testing. The discs have circular grooves inside which PTFE glands are placed. Hydro test is carried out by filling water in the elbow through the provision given in the disc equipped with water inlet line. After filling the water in the elbow, the air vent in other dummy plate is closed by a valve. Water is pressurised gradually till required test pressure is reached. The pressure in hydraulic jack is also increased steadily to avoid water leakage. The hydro test is carried out at required test pressure for required time.
TEST RESULT
[0061] After doing many trials, a unique hydro testing device/fixture for arresting the pipe and sealing the end openings with PTFE gland fixed inside grooved flange is developed. This flanged sealing setup has been tested for working up to 120 Kg/cm2 pressure in straight pipe of outer diameter, OD 219 mm and thickness 12 mm. This was done to reduce cycle time of hydro testing operation at BHEL. The hydraulic force during hydro-test is directly proportional to hydro test pressure and area of pipe (calculated with ID of pipe). Based on the force, the hydraulic jack(s) of suitable capacity may be selected.
[0062] Therefore, it may be significant that when applied in industrial manufacturing settings, the present invention significantly enhances the efficiency, and quality control and reduces the cost and human efforts in performing the hydro testing for pipes and elbows. It further eliminates unnecessary steps, material wastage, and simplifies the overall testing process.
