Abstract: The present disclosure relates to a PVA based barrier composition comprising plasticizers, and optionally alcohols, which give superior desirable oxygen transmission rate values, thus being a suitable and superior alternative to metallization based barriers.
Claims:1. A barrier composition comprising:
a. polyvinyl alcohol (PVA); and
b. at least one plasticizer,
wherein PVA weight concentration in said composition is in the range of about 5-10%, and weight concentration of the at least one plasticizer in said composition is in the range of about 5-18%.
2. The composition as claimed in claim 1, wherein said at least one plasticizer is selected from the group consisting of polyvinyl alcohol, polyethylene glycol, propylene glycol, sucrose, glycerol, and combinations thereof.
3. The composition as claimed in claim 2, comprising:
a. polyvinyl alcohol having weight concentration in the range of 5-10%; and
b. propylene glycol having weight concentration in the range of 5-18%.
4. The composition as claimed in claim 3, comprising:
a. polyvinyl alcohol having weight concentration in the range of 6-8%; and
b. propylene glycol having weight concentration in the range of 8-12%.
5. A method of preparing a barrier composition, said method comprising:
a. adding polyvinyl alcohol with weight concentration in the range of 5-10% to water under heating at a temperature in a range of 90-95°C and for 60-90 minutes to obtain a first solution; and
b. adding at least one plasticizer with weight concentration in the range of about 5-18% to first solution and mixing at a temperature within a range of about 40-60°C and for about 10-15 minutes to obtain the said composition.
6. The composition as claimed in claim 1, further comprising at least one alcohol having weight concentration in the range of 10-20%, said at least one alcohol selected from the group consisting of ethanol, isopropyl alcohol, tertiary butyl alcohol, and combinations thereof.
7. The composition as claimed in claim 6, comprising:
a. polyvinyl alcohol having weight concentration in the range of 5-10%;
b. propylene glycol having weight concentration in the range of 5-18%; and
c. isopropyl alcohol having weight concentration in the range of 10-20%
8. The composition as claimed in claim 7, comprising:
a. polyvinyl alcohol having weight concentration in the range of 5-8%;
b. propylene glycol having weight concentration in the range of 8-12%; and
c. isopropyl alcohol having weight concentration in the range of 10-16%.
9. A method of preparing a barrier composition, said method comprising:
a. adding polyvinyl alcohol with weight concentration in the range of 5-10% to water under heating at a temperature in a range of 90-95°C and for 60-90 minutes to obtain a first solution;
b. adding at least one plasticizer with weight concentration in the range of 5-18% to first solution and mixing at a temperature in a range of 40-60°C and for 10-15 minutes to obtain a second solution; and
c. adding at least one alcohol with weight concentration in the range of 10-20% to the second solution and mixing at a temperature in a range of 30-50°C and for 10-15 minutes to obtain said composition.
10. A barrier film comprising a composition as claimed in any of the claims 1-4 and 6-8 coated on a substrate, wherein said coating thickness on said substrate is in the range of 0.5-1gm-2, having oxygen transmission rate in the range of 0.2-2cc/m2/day.
11. The barrier film as claimed in claim 10, wherein said substrate is a material selected from the group consisting of polymer film, and paper, said polymer film is selected from the group consisting of polyethylene terephthalate, polypropylene, biaxially oriented polypropylene and the combinations thereof, and said polymer film can be single layered or multi-layered flexible film.
12. The barrier film as claimed in claim 10, wherein said coating of said composition on said substrate is carried out by a process selected from the group consisting of gravure coating, direct, reverse, offset, and smooth roll applications.
13. A packaging material comprising a barrier film as claimed in any of the claims 10-11.
