A Control Rod Cap Integrated With A High Pressure Fuel Pump

Abstract: A high pressure fuel pump 10 is described. The high pressure fuel pump 10 comprises a housing 12, and a control rod 14, a first end of the control rod 14 secured to a governor, an opposite second end of the control rod 14 inserted through the housing 12, wherein the governor is adapted to translate the control rod 14 within the housing 12. A control rod cap 18 is secured to the housing 12 by screwing a plurality of external screw threads that are defined on an outer surface of the control rod cap 18 to a plurality of internal screw threads that are defined within the housing 12, the control rod cap 18 adapted to prevent the control rod 14 from translating beyond a maximum permissible displacement within the housing 12 during a starting phase of the high pressure fuel pump 10.

Specification

1. A high pressure fuel pump (10), said high pressure fuel pump (10) comprising: a housing (12);
a control rod (14), a first end of said control rod (14) secured to a governor, an opposite second end of said control rod (14) inserted through said housing (12), wherein said governor is adapted to translate said control rod (14) within said housing (12) to facilitate controlling a quantity of pressurized fuel that is delivered from said high pressure fuel pump (10); characterized in that a control rod cap (18) secured to said housing (12) by screwing a plurality of external screw threads that are defined on an outer surface of said control rod cap (18) to a plurality of internal screw threads that are defined within said housing (12), said control rod cap (18) adapted to prevent said control rod (14) from translating beyond a maximum permissible displacement within said housing (12) during a starting phase of said high pressure fuel pump (10).
2. The high pressure fuel pump (10) in accordance with Claim 1 wherein said control rod cap (18) comprises a control rod cap housing (20) and a limiting pin (22) inserted within a bore (24) defined within said control rod cap housing (20).

The high pressure fuel pump (10) in accordance with Claim 2 wherein said limiting pin (22) comprises a plurality of external screw threads that are defined along a longitudinal axis of said limiting pin (22), the external screw threads that are defined along the longitudinal axis of said limiting pin (22) mesh with a plurality of internal screw threads that are defined along a

longitudinal axis of the bore (24) defined within said control rod cap housing (20) to facilitate translating said limiting pin (22) within the bore (24) defined within said control rod cap housing (20).

The high pressure fuel pump (10) in accordance with Claim 3 wherein said limiting pin (22) is translated within the bore (24) defined within said control rod cap housing (20) by means of a screwing instrument such as a screwdriver that is inserted within a groove (26) at an end of said limiting pin (22) and rotated to cause the plurality of external screw threads that are defined along the longitudinal axis of said limiting pin (22) to mesh with the plurality of internal screw threads that are defined along the longitudinal axis of the bore (24) defined within said control rod cap housing (20) to facilitate translating said limiting pin (22) within the bore (24) defined within said control rod cap housing (20).
5. The high pressure fuel pump (10) in accordance with Claim 3 wherein a pitch of the external screw threads that are defined along the longitudinal axis of said limiting pin (22) and a pitch of the internal screw threads that are defined along the longitudinal axis of the bore (24) defined within said control rod cap housing (20) may be user defined.

The high pressure fuel pump (10) in accordance with Claim 3 wherein a bore (27) with internal threads defined within a locknut (28) is inserted through said limiting pin (22), said locknut (28) adapted to be secured against said control rod cap housing (20) to secure said limiting pin (22) and thereby preventing said control rod (14) from translating beyond a maximum permissible displacement within said housing (12) of said high pressure fuel pump (10) during a starting phase of said high pressure fuel pump (10).

The high pressure fuel pump (10) in accordance with Claim 6 wherein a washer (30) is positioned between said locknut (28) and said control rod cap housing (20), said washer (30) adapted to secure said locknut (28) against said control rod cap housing (20) to constitute a locknut-washer-control rod cap housing assembly.

A control rod cap (18) secured to a housing (12) of a high pressure fuel pump (10), said control rod cap (18) secured to said housing (12) of said high pressure fuel pump (10) by screwing a plurality of external screw threads that are defined on an outer surface of said control rod cap (18) to a plurality of internal screw threads that are defined within said housing (12) of said high pressure fuel pump (10), said control rod cap (18) adapted to prevent a control rod (14) from translating beyond a maximum permissible displacement within said housing (12) of said high pressure fuel pump (10) during a starting phase of said high pressure fuel pump (10).
9. The control rod cap (18) in accordance with Claim 8 wherein said control rod cap (18) comprises a control rod cap housing (20) and a limiting pin (22) inserted within a bore (24) defined within said control rod cap housing (20).

The control rod cap (18) in accordance with Claim 9 wherein said limiting pin (22) comprises a plurality of external screw threads that are defined along a longitudinal axis of said limiting pin (22), the external screw threads that are defined along the longitudinal axis of said limiting pin (22) mesh with a plurality of internal screw threads that are defined along a longitudinal axis of the bore (24) defined within said control rod cap housing (20) to facilitate translating said limiting pin (22) within the bore (24) defined within said control rod cap housing (20).
