A Device And Method For Loading, Transporting And Unloading Liquid Containers Of Cylindrical Shape

Abstract: The device for loading, transporting and unloading liquid containers of cylindrical shape consists of two L-shaped plates (13) formed by welding two channels. The L-shaped plates are inserted underneath the bottom of work piece (19) by tilting the work piece 5 degrees to the horizontal. L-shaped plates are welded to a bottom curved plate (11) butted to the work piece (19). A lifting eye (12) is welded to the curved plate (11). The curved plate (11) is welded to the vertical channel (01). One end of a bottom sling (18) is welded to the lifting eye (12). The other end of the sling traversing the back of the circumference of the work piece reaches a locking pin arrester plate (15) when one of the circular ring of the sling (18) is placed concentrically with the holes of the arrester plate so that a bottom locking pin (14) is inserted using the guide tube (16) for totally arresting the bottom part of the device. Similarly, a top curved plate (06), lifting eye (07), top sling (17), arrester plate (08), locking pin (09) and guide pin (10) are configured for arresting the top part in similar way as the bottom. The crane with hook (20) and lifting eye (03) can lift and transport the work piece in any direction.

Specification

FIELD OF INVENTION
The present invention relates to a device and method for loading, transporting and unloading liquid containers of cylindrical shape having no access for direct holding. More particularly, the invention relates to a portable device used for lifting and transporting cylindrical containers filled with liquid oil in both horizontal and vertical direction by means of an overhead lifting device.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION AND PRIOR ART
Normally drums in cylindrical shape otherwise called as barrel used to store lubrication oil, gear box oil, hydraulic oil etc. Since the container is in cylindrical shape and considering the weight of the barrel with the medium inside, it is difficult for loading and unloading in a safe manner. Generally, in industries forklift is used for loading, transportation and unloading. In places where forklifts are not available, the barrels are lifted by directly hooking the edges to crane and lifted in horizontal position. This is an unsafe method and cannot be used for more heights. Several devices are available in the market with complicated designs. Hence there is a need to design a simple device with simple components and easy to operate and to handle the barrels to the greater heights as required.

Prior Art
1. US3915488A1
Describes a barrel lifting device with a three arm beam member horizontally over lines and shape. A three-arm beam member horizontally overlies and spans the upwardly disposed end of a cylindrical drum and is provided with clamp jaws secured to its respective arm end portions in depending relation. One of the clamp jaws is movable toward and away from an arc of a circle described by the clamp jaws for gripping intermediate circumferential wall portions of a drum being lifted. Lever means connected, at one end, to the movable jaw is also connected at its other end to a lifting loop vertically and slid ably supported centrally by the beam for pivoting the movable jaw to a drum gripping and releasing position in response to vertical movement of the lifting loop. The above invention only top loading/vertical loading possible whereas the present invention is applicable for both vertical and horizontal direction usages.
2. US2789858A1
Describes a lifting device with top loading only whereas the present invention covers the bottom position of the barrel also.

3. US5303968A1
Describes the locking mechanism with gripping arches whereas the present invention uses different locking mechanism.
4. US20050074317A1
Describes cart to lift barrels with handles and hook arrangement only to reduce the effort of lifting and moving the barrel around and in this invention the barrel cannot be lifted to greater heights. Whereas the present invention can be used to much higher heights for transportation.
OBJECTS OF THE INVENTION
Therefore, it is an object of the invention to propose a device and method for loading, transporting and unloading liquid containers of cylindrical shape having no access for direct holding, which is capable of providing support on top and bottom ends of the barrel/cylindrical container for its rigid holding and necessary movement without involving any risk and hazard.
Another object of the invention is to propose A device and method for loading, transporting and unloading liquid containers of cylindrical shape having no access for direct holding, which can provide controlled center of gravity during lifting, transporting and unloading the barrels/cylindrical containers for an easy and safe movement.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
Storage drums used for storing liquids, semiliquid’s such as grease etc. are formed of steel and cylindrical in shape are lifted and transported to unload in the desired place. accordingly, two channels welded in the inverted “L” form with curved plates specifically designed with one for bottom side and another for top side welded in the vertical channel. Two additional plates are welded on the top of the vertical channel and lift end of the horizontal channel respectively. Two “L” plates are welded with equal-space in the bottom curved plates to avoid slippage in any position. Two slings are used with one at the bottom curved plate and another one at the top curved plate. One end of the slings welded with the lifting eye and another end locked with locking pin arrester, both in the top and bottom curved plate. The slings lock the barrel with the lifting device and arrest its movement. The horizontal channel having the lifting eye on the right end instead of at center so that the weight of barrel is carried partly by vertical channel and partly by two “L” plates.

Figure 7: Shows the locking pin using in the top and bottom curved plates.
Figure 8: Shows the whole apparatus assembled with the loose components and the work piece to be lifted vertical in position.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF A PREFERRED EMBODIMENT OF THE INVENTION
Accordingly referring to the Figure 8, to lift the work piece (19) in vertical position, the work piece (19) is to be tilted slightly 5 degrees to the horizontal to insert two no’s of the ‘L’ plates (13) underneath the bottom of the work piece (19). The ‘L’ plates (13) are already welded with the bottom curved plate (11) and in turn the bottom curved plates welded with the vertical channel (01). Because of this tilting position, the bottom curved plated (11) is butted with work piece (19). A left hand lifting eye (12) is welded to the bottom curved plate (11). One end of the bottom sling

(18) is welded with left hand lifting eye (12) on the bottom on the curved plate (11). The sling (18) then travels the back of the circumference of the cylinder to reach the locking pin arrester plate (15) when the other end of the sling (18) having one of the circular rings is placed concentrically with the holes made in the locking pin arrester plate (15) so that the bottom locking pin (14) can be inserted using the guide tube (16). By this method of locking described above, the bottom portion of the work piece (19) is totally arrested for the movement in any direction. The operation is repeated on the top portion the work piece (19) where the top curved plate (06) is welded to the vertical channel (01) and the top curved plate (06) is butted on the work piece (19) in which one end of the top curved plate (06) is welded with left hand lifting eye (07) and one end of the top sling (17) is welded to the lifting eye (07) and traversing back of the circumference of the cylinder reaches the locking pin arrester plate (08) whereas the other end of the sling ring (17) having one of the circular ring being placed concentric with holes of the locking pin arrester plates (08) so that the top locking pin (09) can be inserted using the guide pin (10) which is welded on the bottom of the arrester plate (08). By this method of locking, all the degrees of freedom arrested in the top portion on the work piece (19). With this operation the hook (20) of the crane (another known lifting device) is inserted in the lifting eye (03) of the horizontal channel (02) to lift vertically to transport in any desired place. The dismantling portion is reversed in the above described procedure so that after transportation, the device can be used for

other work piece (19) movement. The horizontal movement of the work piece (19) is carried out similar to the loading mechanism used in the bottom and top of the work piece (19). Now the plurality of the crane hooks is inserted in the lifting eyes of the vertical channel (01) so that the work piece can be transported in the horizontal desired position, by the above method of operation the draw backs said in the background are eliminated.
