A Device For Wheel Removal From Railway Wheel Set

Abstract: The present invention relates to a new device designed for transmitting the force required for wheel removal at the wheel hub in place of wheel rim. The force required to remove the wheel with this art has been recorded as 150 tonnes which is considered safe for the operator. The introduction of such device put inside the axles and placed besides the wheel and applied force on the device near hub area and the transmitted force pushes the wheel out of axles.

FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a device for wheel removal from axle of
railways wheel set.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Wheel set for railway application is defined as assembly of wheels (2nos.) on
axle (1 no.). This is a very critical assembly as any compromise at fitting stage
can lead to pre-mature failure which can result in a catastrophic accident. The
wheels are fitted on the axle with interference fit and mounted by applying
force. The force to be applied is defined as per the amount of interference
provided in design. Also proper distance between the wheels is required to be
maintained as per railways guidelines. It may so happen at times that either
the applied force is not as per recommendations or the wheel to wheel distance
is not achieved. In either case it becomes necessary to remove the wheels and
re-fit the same. Wheel removal is also done on old wheel sets where old wheels
have worn out and new wheels are to be fitted. Whenever wheels are removed
it is necessary to ensure that the axle does not get damaged.
The wheels were being removed, whenever required, by applying force on the
wheel rim in the direction opposite to that used for pressing the wheels. The

level of force required to remove the wheels was of the order of 300 tonnes.
This is considered an unsafe operation as it can lead to failure of the wheel and
consequent injury to the operator. Simultaneously, oil is injected under
pressure between axle and wheel hub, through radial holes provided in the
wheel. The above procedure had been used regularly and the axle was
observed to be getting damaged in more than 80% of the cases. This resulted
in wastage of time in re-grinding the axle and rejection of wheel.
OBJECTS OF THE INVENTION
It is therefore, an object of the invention to propose a device for wheel removal
from the railway wheel sets which eliminates the disadvantages of the prior art.
Another object of the present invention is to propose a device for wheel
removal from the railway wheel sets which permits low consumption of energy.
A further object of the present invention is to propose a device for wheel
removal from the railway wheel sets which reduces the number of damages of
wheel.
A still further object of the present invention is to propose a device for wheel
removal from the railway wheel sets which reduces the number of damages of
axles.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a new device designed for transmitting the
force required for wheel removal at the wheel hub in place of wheel rim. The
force required to remove the wheel with this art has been recorded as 150
tonnes which is considered safe for the operator. The introduction of such
device put inside the axles and placed besides the wheel and applied force on
the device near hub area and the transmitted force pushes the wheel out of
axles.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE ACCOMPANYING DRAWING
Fig 1- shows a front view of Railway wheels and force application in prior art.
Fig 2- shows a front view of Railway wheels and Force application as per
invention.
Fig 3- shows a photo view of a device for wheel removal as per invention.
Fig 4- shows a front view of the device for wheel removal.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF A PREFERRED EMBODIMENT OF THE
INVENTION
As shown in fig 4- The Device (1) comprises a truncated circular plate shape
having a thick wide web and central part is hollow (2) and made of steel
material. The device is inserted inside the axle (3) of the wheel sets (4) and
placed besides the hub of the wheel. A force is applied on the device (1) which
'is being transmitted to wheel and allows the wheel to push out of axle.

WE CLAIM
1. A Device for wheel removal from Railway wheel sets comprising
a Truncated circular shaped thick plate having a central hollow
part;
puts inside the axle of the wheel sets and place besides hub of
the wheel;
applied force on the device which is being transmitted to hub of
the wheel and pushed the wheel out of axle;
2. The device as claimed in claim 1, is made of steel material.
3. The device as claimed in claim 1, have machined surfaces in both central
hollow part and outside dimension of the device.

The present invention relates to a new device designed for transmitting the
force required for wheel removal at the wheel hub in place of wheel rim. The
force required to remove the wheel with this art has been recorded as 150
tonnes which is considered safe for the operator. The introduction of such
device put inside the axles and placed besides the wheel and applied force on
the device near hub area and the transmitted force pushes the wheel out of
axles.
