1. A drum brake (10), the drum brake (10) comprising:
a back plate (105);
a brake drum fastened to wheels and adapted to rotate with the wheels;
a set of brake shoes (110) mounted on the back plate (105);
a friction brake lining (115) mounted on each of the set of brake shoes and adapted to rub against the brake drum for braking;
a wheel cylinder to push the set of brake shoes towards the brake drum;
a set of return springs, adapted to return the set of brake shoes to an original position;
characterized in that:
a set of split pins (120) mounting the set of brake shoes (110) on the back plate (105).

Field of the invention

Background of the invention
[0002] Brakes are an important component of any vehicle. The failure of brakes can pose imminent danger to the safety of the vehicle and the passengers in the vehicles. The components of the brakes need to be durable and long lasting to reduce the chances of brake failure. There is always a requirement to improve the durability of components or use more durable and long lasting components to improve the brake life.

Detailed description of the embodiments
[0004] A drum brake uses friction between a set of brake linings or friction pads and a rotating drum that is connected to the wheel. The friction between the brake linings and friction pads are used to reduce the speed of the wheels and either slow down the vehicle or bring the vehicle to a stop.

[0005] Figure 1 shows a schematic of a drum brake 10. The drum brake 10 comprises a back plate 105 to which the brake side of the components of the drum brake are connected, a brake drum fastened to the wheels and adapted to rotate with the wheels. The drum brake 10 further comprises a set of brake shoes 110 mounted on the back plate 105, a friction brake lining 115 mounted on each of the set of brake shoes 110 and adapted to rub against the brake drum for braking. The drum brake 10 further comprises a wheel cylinder to push the set of brake shoes 110 towards the brake drum, which is in response to the driver applying brakes. The drum brake 10 further comprises a set of return springs adapted to return the set of brake shoes 110 to an original position. The above construction of the drum brake 10 is understood by a person skilled in the art.

[0006] The drum brake 10 also comprises a set of split pins 120 mounting the set of brake shoes 110 on the back plate 105. The usage of split pins 120 helps maintaining the holding force of the brake shoe 110 towards the back plate 105. This reduces any possibility of a vibration of brake lining 115 and consequently reduces the possibility of brake failure. This improves passenger safety and the life of the brake system as well. Wear and tear of the set of brake shoes 110 will also reduce. The performance of the braking system improves as well.
