A Process And A Machine For Recycling Site Won Spoil

A process for recycling site-won spoil comprising predominantly non-granular cohesive material from an excavation into a material immediately suitable for use as a backfill, comprises breaking up the extracted spoil, and mechanically mixing the broken up extracted spoil with up to 30% added granular material and 1 to 10% of a powder material comprising lime or lime with the addition of cement and/or pulverised fly ash in an automatically powered machine that rotavates the components together into the output material. A machine for carrying out the process comprises means (8) for receiving the excavated material, means (12) for adding powder material, means (10) in the receiving means (8) for breaking up the material and amalgamating it with granular material, mixing means (14) for mixing and discharging, means (50) for supplying water and means (70) for controlling the proportions of water, spoil, granular material and powder material.
