Abstract: The present invention disclosed a process for the preparation of etomidate in which the R-(+)-phenylethylamine is reacted with ethyl chloroacetate in absence of a solvent to give R-(+)-N-[(ethoxycarbonyl)methyl]-l-phenylethylamine, which is formylated to give R-(+)-(N-formyl-N-[(ethoxycarbonyl)methyl]-l-phenylethylamine. This is further C-formylatedto give R-(+)-ethyl-2-[formy(l-phenylethyl)amino]-3-hydroxyacrylate . The obtained compound is cyclized to obtain R-(+)-l-(l-phenylethyl)-2-mercapto-5-(ethoxycarbonyl)imidazoleand this is further desulferisedin presence of hydrogen peroxide, water and a solvent to obtain R-(+)-etomidate.
