FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to an adjustable bicycle stem that allows the riders to adjust the stem of bicycle to variable length. More particularly, the present invention relates to an adjustable bicycle stem that helps the kids and/or person with low height to make their posture comfortable despite their height gain.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
A bicycle is a small, human powered land vehicle which is an important way to travel in different parts of the world. It is one of the most important resources of travelling used by the people of every generation. All age group people have their some basic requirements while riding the bicycle. Therefore to suit the physical attribute of human bodies, different sizes of handlebar stems are manufactured accordingly. Previously, bicycles are manufactured with the stem holding the handlebar in a fixed position with respect to the frame which is not suitable for all types of riders. Maintaining the body position required with this type of bicycle may be uncomfortable during the course of a long ride. Riders such as kids in the growing age also have problem in adjusting the posture and reach in the bicycle as they grow in size. It becomes difficult to use the bicycle for longer duration of time. So there is requirement of an adjustable stem which allows the kids to make their posture comfortable despite their growth height gain. In recent years many different types of adjustable handlebars are developed so that the rider had a comfortable ride.
US2015/0344098Al discloses a bicycle stem which has been developed with features that allow quick and easy adjustment of the distance between the handlebar and the shaft of the steering fork of the bicycle of application. It comprises a bar having at one end a clamp for securing on the tube shaft of the steering fork of the bicycle, a fastener which is associated with a clamp for engaging the handlebar sliding on said bar, including a locking system for fixing the sliding fastener in selective positions
along the bar. The user can therefore modify the position of the handlebar by simply releasing the retention of the sliding fastener on the bar of the stem and moving said sliding fastener engaged with the handlebar to its new position on the bar of the stem, locking it again in the new position. The drawback of this type of stem is that locking is provided by means of a key which goes through the sliding fastener and can be selectively inserted in a set of holes made on the bar of the stem.
US20150225035 Al discloses a bicycle stem, which is adapted to be mounted between a handlebar and a steering tube of a bicycle, includes a body and a clamping member. The body has a clamping end and a connecting end where the connecting end of the body has a through hole for accommodating the steering tube. The body defines a pair of sliding grooves on a top thereof. The clamping member has a hook grip portion and a blade portion extending from one end of the hook grip portion. The blade portion of the clamping member has a pair of sliding protrusions formed on a bottom and slid into the sliding grooves of the body so that the clamping member is slidably mounted to the body. Under this arrangement, the hook grip portion of the clamping member cooperates with the clamping end of the body to clamp the handlebar.
US 20170233029A1 disclose a press-fit device for bicycle stem comprises a main body and two press-fit sets. The main body has a front-fork hole and a handlebar hole arranged at two ends thereof respectively. The front-fork hole and the handlebar hole have a receiving groove respectively for fluidly communicating therewith. Each press-fit set includes a driving block which has a first inclined guiding surface and a through hole with inner threads for passing through the first inclined guiding surface. A guiding block has a second inclined guiding surface and a guiding hole for passing through the second inclined guiding surface. The first and the second inclined guiding surfaces are respectively formed a tapered side and a divergent side. A press-fit block includes a trepanning hole and two inclined end surfaces. A press-fit screw is passed through the guiding hole and the trepanning hole and screwed with the inner threads.
US20020166406Al disclose a bicycle stem employs a vertically aligned bore in the stem which is adapted to engage with a bicycle fork tube. Within the bore is an
indentation, adapted to receive a correspondingly shaped wedge therein. The wedge is threadably engaged by a bolt member, the bolt passing through the stem. On tightening or loosening of the bolt, the wedge is pulled into or out of the indentation. The wedge includes a fork tube engaging portion to tightly engage the fork tube to secure the stem and fork tube, when the bolt is tightened.
Therefore, there is a need of an improvement in the design of the adjustable stem of bicycle to overcome the disadvantages described in the above mentioned stated art and to provide a safe, smooth way of adjusting the stem in the handlebar of the bicycle so that the kids in the growing age can adjust their posture and reach in the bicycle. Thus the bicycle can be used for longer duration of time. Also people need not to buy a new bicycle at each stage of their child growth which makes the adjustable stem a cost effective technology.
OBJECT OF THE INVENTION
The main object of the present invention is to provide an apparatus that allows the riders of a bicycle to adjust the stem and handlebar to variable length from seat of the bicycle.
Another object of the present invention is to provide an apparatus to modify the position of the handlebar according to the posture of the rider.
Yet another object of the present invention is to provide an apparatus that helps the riders that are kids to adjust the posture and reach in the bicycle.
Yet another object of the present invention is to provide an apparatus that allows use of a bicycle for longer duration of time and by multiple riders i.e. kids of varying age.
Still another object of the present invention is to provide a cost effective technology that provides solution to the problem of expenditure on a bicycle for growing age riders.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to an adjustable bicycle stem that allows the riders to adjust the stem of bicycle to variable length. More particularly, the present invention relates to an adjustable bicycle stem that helps the kids to make their posture comfortable despite their height gain.
In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, an adjustable stem is adapted to be mounted between the handlebar and the steering tube of a bicycle comprising of a stem body with tubular opening on the back portion to accommodate the steering tube and an indentation in the front portion to accommodate adjuster inserts. This tubular opening is a through hole on the back portion of the stem body and is screw fitted to headset of the bicycle through headset holding screws while the front portion of a stem body is assembled to the handlebar of the bicycle with the help of front cap fitted through front cap screws. The stem is adjusted by a clamp mechanism which comprises a four adjuster insert and a front cap for inserting the adjuster insert in the stem body and fitted with the help of four front cap screws. The adjuster insert has a semi spherical hollow body having two ends to be inserted in the stem body to lock the handlebar with stem body at the required distance.
In another embodiment of the present invention, the clamping mechanism is defined as a mechanism to adjust the stem and handlebar to variable length from seat of the bicycle that helps the kids to have the stem adjusted according to their posture and reach in the bicycle. In the clamping mechanism, the stem is adjusted by loosening front cap screws and by inserting the adjuster inserts ahead or behind or both of the handlebar so that one can easily adjust the length of the stem to a longer or shorter size. When a rider adjusts the handlebar, the adjuster inserts are inserted ahead or behind or both of the handlebar to achieve the required distance and locked in the stem body through front cap by using front cap screws. This helps the kids to keep the bicycle with them for a longer duration as they can make their posture comfortable despite their height gain and not to be crouched in their bicycle. The stem is
