Abstract: The present invention is about a filter device for helmets which can purify the air by absorbing toxic gases (NOx, SOx and TVOC) or air pollutants produced from the vehicle pollution. Filter device can also filter particulate pollution and provides clean air to the helmet user. The newly designed air filter are of three types, one of the filter devices comprised of polyurethane sponge with different thickness (3 mm and 5 mm), which is impregnated with activated carbon. The second type of filter device is comprised of activated carbon fabric. The third type of filter is melt blown sheet attached with PU sponge impregnated with activated carbon. The intrinsic activity of the air purification filter device checked. Iodine number of the activated carbon sponge and activated fabric filter was 700-850 mg/g, 1100-1200 mg/g respectively. It shows high range absorption capacity of TVOC (Total Volatile Organic Compound), odor and ammonia gases. The antibacterial activity was also evaluated, these filter devices can kill bacteria up to 97-99%. Third type of filter device with melt blown has a PM2.5 filtration capacity of 99%.

Specification

This disclosure generally relates to the air purification filter. The disclosure further relates to a new design of air filter and its combination with motor cycle helmet especially for providing clean (purified) air to the user.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The industrial revolution and the population on the earth increasing every year; pumping out dirty emissions causes dangerously polluted air to the environment. The present burning problem to the world is air pollution; it causes huge health problems to humans such as heart stroke, heart diseases, lung cancer and respiratory diseases, including asthma. According to the new data from WHO (W.H.O May-2018), revealed 9 out of 10 people breathe contaminated air with high levels of air pollutants and which causes 7 million people deaths every year. In India, most of the cities are experiencing urbanization and most of the population is expected to live in cities in the next two to three decades ('World Cities Report 2016- Urbanization and Development: Emerging Futures' report by UN Habitat). It results in an enormous increase in the number of motor cycles and other automobile vehicles thus becoming the main source of air pollution and makes air, unfit to breathe. The main pollutant gases in the air are oxides of carbon (CO, CO2), nitrogen (NOx) and sulfur (SOx).
Particulate pollution is another type of air pollution which is different than gaseous pollution. PM2.5 and PM10 refer to particulate matter (PM) in the atmosphere that has a particle size of

2.5 and 10 micrometers, which is smaller than the diameter of a human hair. Coarse dust particles (PM10) having particle sizes ranging from 2.5 to 10 um are generated from crushing or grinding operations and dust stirred up by the vehicles on traffic roads. PM2.5 particles produced from vehicles combustion, wood burning, agricultural burning and some industrial processes. Older adults and children's or people with lung or heart diseases are most likely to be affected by this pollution. Particle pollution causes irregular heartbeat and reduces lung function which results pre-mature death of people.
The existing motorcycle helmet doesn't have any air purification system in it. It's mainly designed, to protect head injury during the accidents and can't shield from the toxic air pollutants around in the traffic. WO publication WO2016/079606 Al shows a motorcycle helmet with a combination of inbuilt air filtration system which consists of air filter, arranged along a chin arc region of the helmet. WO patent WO 2017/032626 describes a helmet, especially full face helmet having a non-breathable fabric at the lower opening of the helmet, which accommodates the neck of a person who is wearing the helmet.
Activated carbon based air conditioner filters are widely used and available in the market. Activated carbon has a very high surface area which can absorb a range of harmful gases such as benzene, toluene, xylene, ammonia and NOx and SOx from the contaminated places. This unique property of activated carbon makes wide usage in the air purification industry. In addition to gas absorption properties, activated carbon also has an excellent affinity towards bacteria (Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus) and other microorganisms and hence it can also act as an antibacterial agent.
Strong demand for an air filter for motor cycle helmet raises, which can absorb harmful gases and also filter particulate matter in the air.

Since activated carbon is a very good absorber for gas pollutants in the air. The present invention discloses the making of an air filter comprising activated carbon impregnated polyurethane sponge, and with combination of melt blown, in a particular design for motor cycle users.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
The present invention related to air purification device for motor cycle helmets, which can absorb polluted gases and also can filter particulate maters in the air. Simple process to make, easy to use and economically viable, makes this filter device unique.
The detailed description of making the sponge filter has shown in figure 1. Briefly, 105 g of hardener, 300 g of activated carbon powder and 105 g of binder added to 2 L of Demineralized water and mixed well for at least 20 min. The resultant solution is black in color. Polyurethane (PU) sponge with different PPI (pores per inch) and different thickness (3 mm and 5 mm) was treated with the above mentioned black color solution. 1 m2 size PU sponge dipped for 5 min and taken out from the solution and air dried for 30 min. Finally, sponge dried in a hot air oven at a temperature of 80OC for 3h to get the final filter.
Figure 2 shows the view of the present air filter device which was cut according to the design. The detailed dimensions of the design filter have shown in figure 3. Final length and width of the filter device is 126 mm and 46 mm respectively. Three types of filter devices are proposed as per the embodiments mentioned above. One of the filter devices comprised of polyurethane sponge with different thickness (3 mm and 5 mm), which is impregnated with activated carbon. The second type of filter device is comprised of activated carbon fabric. The third type of filter is melt blown sheet attached with PU sponge impregnated with activated carbon powder.
6

The intrinsic activity of the air purification filter device checked. Iodine number of the activated carbon sponge was around 700-850 mg/g, whereas the activated fabric filter was 1100-1200 mg/g. This observation suggests that filter device has a very high surface to absorb pollutant gases from the air. TVOC (Total Volatile Organic Compound), odor and ammonia absorption by the above mentioned filters has tabulated and presented below. The contaminated air also contains bacteria and these filter devices can kill up to 97-99%. Third type of filter device with melt blown has a PM2.5 filtration capacity of 99%.
The present invention discloses with respect to certain specific embodiments, it shall be respected that several amendments and alterations may be made by those skilled in the art without departing from the scope and spirit of the disclosure
