Specification

FIELD OF THE INVENTION

[001] The subject matter in general relates to the field of
manufacturing seamless steel tubes and pipes. More particularly, but not exclusively, the subject matter relates to an apparatus for extracting the plug trapped in a tube during its manufacturing.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[002] Background description includes information that may be useful
in understanding the present subject matter. It is not an admission that any of the information provided herein is prior art or relevant to the presently claimed subject matter, or that any publication specifically or implicitly referenced is prior art.
[003] Seamless steel tubes are manufactured by cold drawing the
tubes on the draw benches using draw dies and plugs. Draw benches are used for maintaining the external and internal parameters of the tube. The tube is processed with help of a drawing carriage. Outside diameter of the tube varies from 90mm to 133mm and wall thickness varies from 2mm to 12.5mm, with the material grade varying from carbon steel to low alloy steel. Plug is a cylindrical object that is used in the draw bench for maintaining the inner and outer diameter of the tubes while drawing.
[004] During the drawing process, due to some unavoidable
circumstances, like loosening of the plugs, eccentricity & irregular internal profiles of the tubes, increased draw force on the plug, the plug cuts inside and gets released from the adapter. The plug gets trapped inside the tube and comes with the undrawn part of the tube. Finally, the incomplete drawn tube comes out of the draw bench and falls in the collecting trough. The tube is then lifted with the help of an HT Crane and taken out of the

collecting trough and marked for cutting and removing the plug trapped tube area.
[005] Conventionally, the length of the tube within which the plug is
trapped is reduced using a band saw cutting machine so that the tube can be held using a lathe. During the plug removal process, the plug gets scratched and dents are formed due to the rubbing of the plug with the cutting tool. In order to remove the scratches and dents, the plug is loaded onto a centreless grinder. Chamfering operation on both ends of the plug is carried out in the tool and cutter machine. Further, polishing work is done manually by loading the plug on a chuck in a lathe. Finally, the plug is ready to be re used in the draw bench.
[006] The drawbacks of the conventional plug removal processes are listed down below:
• During the removal of the plug using the lathe machine there are chances that the plug may jump out of the machine creating an unsafe condition for the working personnel.
• The tool tip gets blunt due to friction and the constant rubbing of the tool with the plug while turning. As a result, the cutting tool needs to be changed regularly after removing approximately 10 plugs.
• The machining operation reduces the plug dimension due to which the plug cannot be reused. As the plug is made of tungsten carbide, which is expensive, using a new plug every time becomes an expensive affair.
• As multiple operations are to be performed on the tubes, the time required for plug removal is more. Also, the man power, electricity & skill required for all the processes are more.
