Abstract: The present subject matter discloses an apparatus for detecting interface bonding defects in silicone rubber composite insulators. The present system includes an immersion tank that holds the insulator and an ultrasonic transducer that is used to generate and receive ultrasonic waves. The immersion tank is filled with water or glycerin as coupling fluid which provides a path for the ultrasonic waves to propagate through the insulator. The ultrasonic transducer is mounted on a computer controlled 2D scanner that move the transducer over the insulator to generate a two dimensional image of the insulators interface bonded surface. This method does not require the ultrasonic transducer to be in contact with the insulator surface as the sound is travelling through immersion medium. The ultrasonic waves are transmitted into the insulator and by analyzing the reflected waves, it is possible to detect any interface bonding defects that may be present.
