Abstract: A compound having a binaphthalene skeleton, which is represented by formula (1), and which is configured such that the content of elemental palladium in the compound having a binaphthalene skeleton satisfies formula (2). (In formula (1), each of R1 and R2 independently represents a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, a hydrocarbon group which may contain an aromatic group having 1-12 carbon atoms; each of Ar1 and Ar2 represents an aromatic group which may have a substituent having 6-10 carbon atoms; each of L1 and L2 represents an alkylene group having 1-12 carbon atoms; each of j and k independently represents an integer of 0-5; and each of m1, m2, n1 and n2 independently represents an integer of 0-4, while satisfying (m1 + m2) = 1, provided that (m1 + n1) is an integer of 4 or less and (m2 + n2) is an integer of 2 or less.) This compound having a binaphthalene skeleton is characterized in that: the content of a specific metal such as the palladium content and the content of a specific compound in the starting material alcohol are small; and the starting material and a resin that uses the starting material are excellent in terms of hue and various characteristics (such as optical characteristics, heat resistance, formability).
