[0001] The invention here relates to the device to facilitate the cold start in a diesel engine and the method thereof.

Background of the invention:
[0002] A cold start is an attempt to start a vehicle’s engine when it is cold, relative to its normal operating temperature mostly due to cold weather. A cold start situation is a common place as the weather conditions in most climates will naturally be at a lower temperature than the typical operating temperature of an engine.
[0003] The Patent application EP1312782, explains the injection pump with cold start acceleration for direct injection in internal combustion engines. Here an adjustment unit shifts the start of injection. This includes a chamber pressurized and de-pressurized by an actuator causing the cold start acceleration piston to be moved. This acts through a spring against the valve slide on one side and on the injection adjustment piston on the other, through a spring casing assembly.

Brief Description of the accompanying drawings
[0004] An exemplifying embodiment of the invention is explained in principle below with reference to the drawings. The drawings are,
[0005] Figure 1 illustrates a view of a device 100 to facilitate the cold start according to an embodiment of an invention; and
[0006] Figure 2 illustrates a method 200 to facilitate the cold start according to an embodiment of an invention.

Detailed Description of the invention:
[0007] Figure 1 illustrates a device 100 to facilitate the cold start in a diesel engine. The device 100 comprises a tank 101, a solenoid valve 102 and a spray nozzle 103. The tank 101 is adapted to receive and pressurize the fuel inside the tank 101. The solenoid valve 102 is adapted to receive the fuel from the tank 101. At least a part of the spray nozzle 103 is located in an intake manifold 104 of the diesel engine. The spray nozzle 103 opens on operation of the solenoid valve 102. The spray nozzle 103 atomizes the fuel that is received by the operation of the solenoid valve.
[0008] According to an embodiment of this disclosure the fuel is pressurized using spring 101a and a piston 101b arrangement inside the tank. The spring 101a and piston 101b arrangement is such that it pressurizes the fuel in the tank 101 when fuel is filled in the tank. When the solenoid valve 102 is operated the pressurized fuel flows from the solenoid valve 102 to the spray nozzle 103.
[0009] The fuel used here is a gasoline fuel. The characteristic of gasoline fuel to burn quickly in a lower compression ratio is the reason why gasoline fuel is used for cold starting the diesel engine in accordance with this disclosure. The possibility of using any type of fuel depends on the fuel characteristics such as auto ignition temperature and flash point. For the purposes of better understanding auto ignition temperature and flash point will be defined in the following lines. The auto ignition temperature is the lowest temperature at which the substance will spontaneously ignite in normal atmosphere without any external source of ignition. The flash point is the lowest temperature at which the vapours of the fuel ignites with the help of the ignition source. Also the diesel fuel has a lower auto ignition temperature than the gasoline fuel but higher flash point than gasoline fuel. Therefore in general the lower auto ignition of diesel fuel helps in the initial combustion in the diesel engine and the lower flash point of gasoline helps in cold starting of the diesel engine.
[00010] The working principle of the method of cold starting the diesel engine in accordance with this disclosure is that the gasoline fuel with the air mixture and the diesel injection is done simultaneously.
[00011] Figure 2 shows a method 200 to facilitate cold start in a diesel engine. The method 200 comprising the detection 201 of the environment temperature by temperature sensor. The method 200 further comprising the actuation 202 of a solenoid valve based on the detected 201 environment temperature and the cranking condition of the engine. Here when the engine is in cranking condition and power is on then if the detected 201 environment temperature is less than the threshold temperature then the solenoid valve is actuated 202. When the solenoid valve is actuated 202, the fuel is sprayed 203 in the intake manifold of the diesel engine. And then the diesel engine is started 204 based on the mixing of the sprayed 203 fuel with the air in the intake manifold of the engine. The method 200 of cold starting is discontinued based on the detection 201 of the environment temperature. If the environment temperature is more or equal to the threshold temperature or a specified temperature then the method 200 is stopped.
[00012] According to this disclosure the fuel is sprayed with the help of nozzle spray 103 into the intake manifold 104 and mixed with air to facilitate cold start in the diesel engine. The fuel is mixed with the air for a very small period of time so that no adverse effect is caused to the engine and this small period of time is the engine starting time in the cold condition.
[00013] The air 104a in the intake manifold is mixed with the fuel from spray nozzle 103 and then the air fuel mixture 104b used for the quick start of the diesel engine in cold condition. The device 100 as disclosed facilitates the cold start of the engine and at least a part of the device 100 is attached to the intake manifold 104 of the engine and the device 100 is operable when the two conditions are fulfilled. The two conditions are (i) the cranking condition of the vehicle and (ii) the environment temperature should be less than the threshold temperature. In first condition the cranking condition of the vehicle means when the key is inserted in the vehicle by the user and then the he power is on in the vehicle. As soon as the power is on, the fuel supply is supplied to the engine of the vehicle. In second condition, as soon as the cranking is initiated, the environment temperature is detected with the help of the sensors in the vehicle. The sensor senses the environment temperature and if the environment temperature is less than the specified temperature or threshold temperature then the condition for cold starting the diesel engine are satisfied. The device 100 is then operated and the solenoid valve 102 is actuated. The solenoid valve 102 gets actuated after satisfying the two conditions disclosed above. With the actuation of the solenoid valve 102, the fuel i.e. the gasoline fuel is sprayed in the intake manifold 104 with the help of the spray nozzle 103 where the gasoline fuel gets mixed with the air and is used for cold start of the diesel engine. The actuation of the solenoid valve 102 is stopped with the end of the cranking in the engine and when the environment temperature reached the specified temperature or the threshold temperature.
[00014] The solenoid valve 102 is used to start the flow of the pressurized fuel whenever it is required based on the two conditions disclosed above. The spray nozzle 103 is used to atomize the pressurized fuel for proper mixture formation with the air when the pressurized fuel is sprayed into the intake manifold 104 of the engine in a predetermined amount in relation to engine operating parameters.
[00015] The device 100 as described above can be used as an add-on or supplement in the current diesel engine or any kind of fuel injection system and fitted to the intake manifold 104 of the engine and facilitate the cold start in the diesel engine in cold environment. The use of this device 100 can reduce the black smoke and the white smoke formation as the starting time is reduced in this process of using the pressurized fuel which is gasoline here and mixed with the air in the intake manifold 104 of the engine. The engine will start quickly in no time and therefore less formation of black smoke and white smoke during this short period of time. Since the device 100 can be used as add on to any of the fuel injection system so in the meantime it reduces the dependency on the inbuilt pump which are used for cold start support and therefore the pumps functionality can be increased.
[00016] It must be understood that the embodiments explained in the above detailed description in only illustrative and does not limit the scope of this invention. The scope of this invention is limited only by the scope of the claims. Many modification and changes in the embodiments aforementioned are envisaged and are within the scope of this invention.
