Specification

DESC:HOUSEHOLD WET GARBAGE PROCESSING UNIT
Field of the invention
The present invention generally relates to bio-composter, and more particularly relates to a household wet garbage processing unit.
Background of the invention
Today, the most common practice in the urban cities to dispose the domestic waste is to collect garbage from limited areas and process them. There are central wet garbage processing centers, which treat the wet garbage collected from households. The process requires proper segregation at source, collection of segregated wet waste from several households and dumping the waste in central processing centers.
This process is undermined by improper waste segregation, limitations on logistics to transport wet waste from several corners of the cities to the processing centers, and inadequate capacities of central processing centers to handle wet waste of ever increasing urban and peri-urban population. This results in dumping of wet waste in peri-urban areas of the cities, often resulting in stiff opposition of neighboring villages, due to stench, pollution and contamination.
To overcome this, municipal authorities have mandated larger residential establishments to have decentralized wet waste processing units at housing society level, to reduce the strain on the overtly constrained municipal infrastructure. New buildings are not granted permissions of commencement unless the provision for wet waste processing is approved. Existing establishments procure community waste processing systems with maintenance contracts. The delay in community decisions, lack of entirely proper segregation, poor maintenance and inter-personal issues often lead to in-operation of installed systems, thereby defeating the purpose of decentralized wet waste processing.
Accordingly, there exists a need to provide system and method for interconnecting precast elements that overcome the abovementioned drawbacks of the prior art.
Object of the invention
An object of the invention is to provide a unique garbage processing unit that generates a unique vermi based ecosystem.
Another object of the invention is to provide a garbage processing unit that helps to decompose and process the household wet waste and convert into vermicompost, which is automatically fed to surrounding plants in the unit to provide natural nutrition and enhance their growth.
Summary of the invention
Accordingly, the present invention is related to a household wet garbage processing unit comprising a compost container having vertical, hollow structure, configured with plurality of holes on the surface thereof. It is placed in a vermi-tea collector and covered with a cover plate. A plurality of plant containers triangular in shape and configured with a slot on base surface thereof for fitting around the compost container are stacked one above another by inserting the compost container through the slot, and the lowermost plant container is supported by a stand. The compost container is initially charged with charged with a compost culture and earthworms for rapid decomposition of household and kitchen garbage charged therein. The kitchen waste and other organic waste is then charged into the compost container. The waste is converted into vermi-compost. The plurality of holes on the compost container allows passage of earthworms to the surrounding plants. The vermi-tea collector collects the excess water and vermi-tea from compost container. This arrangement creates a self –regulating ecosystem that stabilizes and adapts gradually to effectively handle even wider variations of use. The unit can be used both indoor and outdoor, and offers flexibility to the user.

Detailed description of the invention
The foregoing objects of the invention are accomplished and the problems and shortcomings associated with prior art techniques and approaches are overcome by the present invention described in the present embodiments.
The present invention provides household wet garbage processing unit that provides a unique vermi-based ecosystem that helps decomposition and processing of household wet waste into vermi-compost and the compost is automatically fed to surrounding plants that are planted in the same unit to provide natural nutrition and enhance their growth. This arrangement creates a self –regulating ecosystem that stabilizes and adapts gradually to effectively handle even wider variations of use. The unit can be used both indoor and outdoor, and offers flexibility to the user.
The present invention is illustrated with reference to the accompanying drawings, throughout which reference numbers indicate corresponding parts in the various figures. These reference numbers are shown in bracket in the following description. Table 1 below enlists the reference numerals used in the diagram and the components they indicate:

Referring to the figures 1 to 6, a household wet garbage processing unit (100) (hereinafter referred as, “the unit (100)”) based on vermiculture is shown.
The unit (100) consists of a plurality of plant containers (10), a compost container (20), a vermi-tea collector (50), and a stand (40) for holding the unit (100).
The compost container (20) is a vertical container open at both the ends and configured with plurality of holes on the surface thereof. In an embodiment, the compost container (20) is of any suitable cross section selected from a square, rectangular, triangular and circular.
The plant container (10) is a triangular case configured with a slot (15) on base surface thereof. Plant containers (10) are stacked one above the other by inserting the compost container (20) through the slot (15). The slot (15) is having a shape such that the plant container (10) fits onto the compost container (20). In an alternate embodiment, the plant containers (10) are triangular cases with curved sides. The plant container (10) at the bottom side is supported with a stand (40).
The compost container (20) extends throughout the height of the garbage processing unit (100) and its top face is open at the uppermost plant container (10). The compost container (20) is filled with the household garbage and used as a waste column, while the plant containers (10) are filed with soil for planting variety of plants therein. The plurality of holes on the side walls of the compost container (20) offers passage for worms and microorganisms to pass from compost to soil and back.
The vermi-tea collector (50) is placed at the bottom side of the compost container (20) and it is covered with a cover plate (30). The vermi-tea collector (50) collects the excess water and vermi-tea from compost container (20)
The garbage processing unit (100) works on segregation discipline. The wet waste deposited at the compost container (20) is converted into vermi-compost by the charged bio-media at the time of installation. The charged bio- media comprises a carefully developed culture and most pertinent species of earthworms. The bio media helps in rapid decomposition of the waste, and converts the waste into vermicompost. The holes on compost container (20) give provisions for worms and compost to be easily transferred to the surrounding plants. These worms help to aerate the soil inside the plant container (10). The vermicompost formed inside the compost container (20) is stable, soil-like material and can be readily removed if required. The plants take sufficient nutrition from the compost and grow normally.
This arrangement creates a self regulating ecosystem that stabilizes and adapts gradually to effectively handle even wider variations of use. The unit can be used both indoor and outdoor, and offers flexibility to the user.
Advantages of the invention:
1. The unit (100) is a compact, user friendly, easy to handle, and the wet garbage and kitchen waste without daily intervention.
2. The unit (100) works at the household level. It works on segregation discipline, independent of neighboring residents and thereby radically limits the problems associated with segregation.
3. The unit (100) enhances the home decor and offers indoor/outdoor flexibility depending on home sizes and layout.
4. Aerobic process prevents any foul odors associated with wet garbage, due to rapid decomposition and aerobic treatment.
5. No need of handling sludge as wet waste sludge is rapidly converted into vermi-compost
6. No energy requirements as it is a passive Process
7. Develops a self - regulating ecosystem that stabilizes and adapts gradually to effectively handle wide variations of use.
8. The compost formed is safer, soil-like material and can be readily removed if required.
9. No risk of mosquito breeding.
10. Supports organic growth of potted plants in the unit.
11. The unit overcomes the rudimentary apprehension of residents to use such garbage processing unit inside or adjacent to the homes.
The foregoing descriptions of specific embodiments of the present invention have been presented for purposes of illustration and description. They are not intended to be exhaustive or to limit the present invention to the precise forms disclosed, and obviously many modifications and variations are possible in light of the above teaching. The embodiments were chosen and described in order to best explain the principles of the present invention and its practical application, and to thereby enable others skilled in the art to best utilize the present invention and various embodiments with various modifications as are suited to the particular use contemplated. It is understood that various omissions and substitutions of equivalents are contemplated as circumstances may suggest or render expedient, but such omissions and substitutions are intended to cover the application or implementation without departing from the scope of the claims of the present invention.
