Led Recessed Down Light

Abstract: The LED down Light is an Indoor LED light fitting for use in low roof ceilings in offices and shopping complexes. The device includes LEDs as light sources organised in the form of a circular array, the light housing is a white powder-coated machined aluminium body; the front of the down light is covered with a diffuser sheet, which distributes the light output uniformly. The down light is powered from mains ac which is converted to dc to energise an LED driver circuit which is electrically connected to the light source. A heat sink is placed on the base of the fixture, which absorbs the heat released from the light source there by enhancing the life of the LEDs. It features spring-loaded mounting clips for easy installation. The LED Down light consumes very less power and has long life compared to conventional lights. This device finds extensive use in homes / offices / shopping malls. Conventional fluorescent lamps contribute to the green house gas emissions which cause environmental pollution; where as by using LEDs in the down light, the low power consumption reduces harmful emissions into the environment significantly.

Field of research:

LED light sources in recessed down lights.

3) OBJECTS OF THE INVENTION:

The present invention is an application of Light Emitting Diode (LED) technology In recessed down lights operating on grid power for office, commercial and home lighting; it is a direct replacement for recessed fluorescent or CFL fixtures. Down light Is used where there Is a need to illuminate a desired target area with high focus and intensity. The main objective of the present invention is deployment of LEDs as light sources fully utilising technological advantages - Low power consumption, long life with minimal maintenance and reduced environmental pollution.

4)PRIOR ART:

Recessed down lights are in existence which deploy fluorescent / CFL light sources.

LED recessed down lights have been discussed in the Patent Application No. 7677770 B2 IP US, wherein LED-based recessed down light particularly used for 'retrofitting' in an existing light fixture is described with a heat sink and a fan for thermal management. Further, the device is designed for working with 120V ac supply.

5) SHORTCOMINGS OBSERVED IN PRIOR ART:

Lighting fixtures for home or office, typically employ incandescent, fluorescent or CFL light sources. The commercial Down lights employ Fluorescent / CFL tubes as light sources. All these suffer from inefficiency, flickering, relatively short life time, burnouts with associated replacements and pollution.

LED Down light produces a constant and uniform lighting without any flickering effect. LED based down lights consume less power that is about half when compared to fluorescent lamps, they last longer (about 50,000hrs) with minimal maintenance requirement.

6) PROPOSED INVENTION

LED recessed down lighting systems address the above concerns. These employ LED light sources and an effective thermal management system for driving away the heat generated by LED light sources. The LED recessed down lighting system assures a long life (50,000hrs) compared to the conventional lighting solutions (Incandescent -2000hrs and Fluorescent (CFL) - 15,000hrs) which also suffer from accidental / frequent burnout. The present invention of LED recessed down light consumes less power with an additional feature of providing light output in different colours using LEDs of appropriate colour temperatures, that is cool / warm white.

Applications of LED recessed down light:
• Office and home lighting
• Star hotels, Clubs and Farm houses / resorts
• Shopping Malls, Retail Stores
• Theatres. Auditoriums

7) Detailed description of the invention with reference to the accompanying drawings:

The present invention of the LED based recessed down light (Fig:4) housing is made up of sheet metal, white powder coated Aluminium body of 6 inch diameter. Power supply section l works with the AC input voltage; converts it into DC and drives the LED light sources. The LEDs are assembled on the Metal-Clad PCB6 (MCPCB) in a circular order, the MCPCB is mounted on the base4 of the fixture. The front end of the fixture is covered by a diffuser sheet7 and the interior coating to the base of the fixture is done with a reflector material, which are arranged for converting the beam angle of the LED light source thereby increasing the intensity and uniformity of the light output. A heat sink3 is affixed to the base of the fixture to cool the LEDs, when they get heated up. Base of the fixture, heat sink and power supply box are assembled by utilising a clamp2 and screws5. The front end of the light fixture is covered with a circular shaped metal enclosure9 with the help of springs8.

The unit is designed for 9W & 18W specs (small variations can be realised through manipulating the drive currents); 6-inch diameter (other models with 4-inch diameter etc can also be contemplated with ease); colour of the light can be varied between warm / cool white with proper selection of LEDs with suitable colour temperatures.

The following sections provide details of the construction and operational features:

1. Construction
2. Block schematic Recessed Down light
3. Targeted Specifications
4. Diagrams / photographs of LED tube

1.Construction
The Down light consists of
• Power supply
• Thermal Management System
• White powder coated Aluminium body containing MCPCB & a reflector coating inside
• MC PCB
• Diffuser
• Spring
• Circular enclosure

The construction is depicted in the exploded view of the Down light in section 4.

2. Block Schematic of Recessed Down light

The input to the power supply section can range from 150V ac - 265V ac. In this block diagram EMI / RFI line filter prevents the high frequency noise. It filters out the noise generated from the load end and ensures its non - interference to the source side.

Input bridge rectifier rectifies the sine wave and provides the pulsating D.C as its output. The output from the bridge rectifier is sent to the single stage Power Factor Control (PFC) / FLY BACK converter.

Single stage PFC / FLY BACK converter performs the operation of power factor correction and maintains the power factor between 0.9 and 1 in order to boost or buck the voltage level as required. It also provides isolation between input and output.

Out put rectifier and filter rectifies the switching signal and filters the ripple components. It also provides sufficient DC voltage for LEDs.

CVCC (Constant Voltage Constant Current) feedback circuit provides constant driving current for LED strings. It also provides the output over-voltage protection. Input section is electrically isolated from the output section but it is optically connected by using opto couplers (it provides isolation up to 5KV for 1min).

LEDs are mounted on the MCPCB. This PCB is electrically isolated and thermally conducting. It transfers the heat generated in LEDs to the metallic casing through which it is radiated into the environment.
