'Method And System For Channel Selection In A Digital Broadcast Reception Terminal'

Abstract: The present invention discloses a system and method for the channel selection in a digital broadcast reception terminal. In one embodiment, on receiving the user instruction, the system sequentially tunes to different frequencies and generates very short visual clips of just a few frames corresponding to all the channels in a specific frequency band. Visual clips of multiple channels are squeezed and simultaneously displayed on the display screen which provides the user an easy way for making the program selection. The user can scroll through the visual clips of the programs from all the available channels and can select the program in which he is interested without the requirement to change channels one by one. Other information like the program name is also displayed below each visual clip. The visual clips are regularly updated when the new picture data is generated from the channels. In one other embodiment, a dedicated tuning unit and demodulator is deployed in the background to continuously generate visual clips for different channels and construct a program guide in the memory. In one preferred embodiment, the system includes the option to generate the visual clips only for the channels which are included in the favorite channel list of the user so that the time lag between two successive updating of visual clip for a specific channel could be minimized.
