FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to methods and systems for configuring operations on a display unit and in particular relates to defining dynamic and context based virtual zones on a display unit to enable a user to select a medium for performing an action.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
With the advancement of technology, a lot many applications have been developed for electronic devices including mobile phone devices. Each of the applications has several features linked to them and each of the features is capable of performing one or more functions or actions. At present, a user has to go through a number of steps and processes to get the one or more functions implemented. In certain situations, the steps and process required to implement one or more functions can be very lengthy and sometimes they can be so difficult to implement that a user may feel to quit the action that it wants to perform. Since there are numerous mediums available to perform an action, it has become quite lengthy and difficult to select the medium for the action.
There exist numerous medium for performing simple actions. For example, for action say to communicate to a person, there are numerous mediums available which can be but not limited, to Cellular data Call, Video Call, VOIP Call, Message, Instant Message, etc. Owing to large number of mediums available, the user has to face a hard time in selecting these medium as the list of the medium is so lengthy. Furthermore, it gets more difficult for a user to select the most appropriate medium for performing an action. For instance in certain situations, it would be more feasible to make a VoIP call and not a cellular data call owing to network bandwidth availability.
Several solutions have developed in the past to improve the user interactions with the applications. In one of the existing solutions, a set of interaction techniques for obtaining the input by detecting properties of flexible displays has been provided. The interaction techniques involve manipulating graphical content and functionality which is displayed on flexible display by detecting the shape, location and orientation of the display.
In yet another existing solution, a method is provided to display a GUI guide indicating a deformation gesture with a function executed when the deformation gesture is performed. The solution provides for displaying a GUI guide on the flexible display by detecting the deformation gesture and by determining whether the detected deformation gesture corresponds to a predetermined deformation gesture and providing an output that indicates a result of the determining.
However, none of the existing techniques enable a user to directly select a medium for performing an action without going through the tedious lengthy tasks. Thus, there exists a need to overcome the above problems and to provide a simple mechanism to enable a user to select a medium for performing an action and at the same time, enable a user to select the most appropriate medium for performing an action.

The forthcoming description of Figures 4-6 depicts examples to illustrate the usefulness of the present invention. However, it may be strictly understood that the forthcoming examples shall not be construed as being limitations towards the present invention and the present invention may be extended to cover analogous manifestations through other type of like mechanisms.
Referring to Figure 4(a-b), an exemplary implementation of the present invention is illustrated. In this exemplary implementation, an image and the corresponding virtual zones in accordance with the invention are illustrated. Referring to Figures 3 and 4a in combination, once an image thumbnail (not shown) is selected by the user, the image, i.e. the digital content, is rendered on the display unit at step 302. Thereafter, the context of the digital content is identified to be of the format of an image. Further, the context may be identified in the form of a category of the digital content, such that it is identified that in case of a multimedia category, “share” action is intended by the user. Different settings may be defined for each category of digital content to completely identify the context.
In the present example, 4 mediums for sharing the image i.e. via Bluetooth, Wi-Fi-Direct, IM APP and SNS APP are detected. Thereafter, various parameters such as, favourite mode, common mode, battery usage, bandwidth availability, RAM consumption, network strength etc. shall be determined. Based on the determined parameters, each of the aforesaid mediums would be mapped to a corresponding virtual zone. Once the mapping is done, each of the zones would be rendered in line with the identified parameters as illustrated in step 304 in Figure 3. In the present case 4 virtual zones i.e. virtual zone 402 corresponding to sharing of image by Bluetooth, virtual zone 404 corresponding to sharing of file Wi-Fi-Direct, virtual zone 406 corresponding to sharing of file IM APP, virtual zone 408 corresponding to sharing of file SNS APP are rendered. Thereafter, an actuation on the display unit in one of the rendered virtual zones is detected at illustrated in step 306 in Figure 3. In the present case, the actuation is made in the virtual zone 404 corresponding to sharing of image by Wi-Fi-direct. Thereafter, the action i.e. the sharing of the image by Wi-Fi-direct is performed (as illustrated in step 308 in Figure 3). Figure 4b illustrates a scenario wherein the actuation is made in the form of bending of the display unit in the virtual zone corresponding to sharing of image by Wi-Fi-direct which results in sharing of the image of Wi-Fi- direct.
Referring to Figure 5a and 5b, another exemplary implementation of the present invention is illustrated. In this exemplary implementation, assuming that user has opened a contact (Mr. XYZ) that is rendered on the display unit as illustrated in Figure 5a. Thereafter, one or more actions that can be performed in respect of the contact are identified. In the present case, the list of actions includes CALL, VIDEO CALL, VOIP/ INTERNET CALL, MESSAGE. Thereafter, various parameters such as, favourite mode, common mode, battery usage, bandwidth availability, RAM consumption, network strength etc. shall be determined. Based on the determined parameters, each of the aforesaid actions would be mapped to a corresponding virtual zone. Once the mapping is done, each of the zones would be rendered in line with the identified parameters as indicated in step 304 in Figure 3.
In the present case 4 virtual zones i.e. virtual zone 502 corresponding to opening a CALL log in respect of the contact, virtual zone 504 corresponding to making a VIDEO CALL to the contact, virtual zone 506 corresponding to making a VOIP/ INTERNET CALL to the contact, virtual zone 508 corresponding to sending a MESSAGE to the contact are rendered. Thereafter, an actuation on the display unit in one of the rendered virtual zones is detected as illustrated in step 306 in Figure 3. In the present case, the actuation is made in the virtual zone 502 that is mapped to CALL. Thereafter, the action i.e. opening the CALL log in respect of the contact (Mr. XYZ) is performed (as illustrated in step 308 in Figure 3).
Figure 5b illustrates a scenario wherein the actuation is made in the form of bending of the display unit in the virtual zone 502 which results in opening/ rendering the CALL log in respect of the contact.
In the present example, if the actuation is made in the virtual zone 506 corresponding to sending making a VOIP/ INTERNET CALL to the contact, then an Internet call shall be made to the contact.
In the present example, if the actuation is made in the virtual zone 508 corresponding to sending a message to the contact, a messaging application will be opened with the contact as the recipient.
In another example as illustrated in Figure 5c, when a CALL log of a contact is rendered on the display unit, two virtual zones in respect of the call log of the contact are rendered on the display unit in accordance with the invention. The first virtual zone 510 corresponds to making a call to the contact from SIM1 and the second virtual zone 512 corresponds to making a call to the contact from SIM 2. In this case, the actuation (bend in the present case) is made in the virtual zone 512 that corresponds to making a call to the contact from SIM 2 and the actuation results in a call through SIM 2 to contact (Mr. XYZ).
In another example, assuming that a message is rendered on the display unit and various virtual zones in respect of the message are rendered on the display unit, wherein one of the virtual zone corresponds to replying to sender of the message through Instant messaging (IM). In such a case, if the actuation is made in the virtual zone corresponding to Instant messaging (IM), then the message shall be replied by IM.

In this exemplary implementation, assuming that user device is locked and user intends to unlock it. An unlock screen is rendered on the display unit. Thereafter, one or more actions that can be performed in respect of unlocking the screen are identified. In the present case, the list of actions includes Pattern unlock, pin unlock, password unlock, face recognition unlock, signature unlock, swipe unlock.
In the present case 6 virtual zones i.e. virtual zone 602 corresponding to Pattern unlock, virtual zone 604 corresponding to PIN unlock, virtual zone 606 corresponding to Password unlock, virtual zone 608 corresponding to face recognition unlock, virtual zone 610 corresponding to signature unlock, virtual zone 612 corresponding to swipe unlock are rendered as illustrated in Figure 6a.
Thereafter, an actuation on the display unit in one of the rendered virtual zones is detected (as illustrated in step 306 in Figure 3). In the present case, assuming that the actuation is made in the virtual zone 602 corresponding to Pattern unlock. Thereafter, the action i.e. unlocking the device through Pattern unlock is performed. Figure 6b illustrates a scenario wherein the actuation is made in the form of bending of the display unit in the virtual zone 602 corresponding to Pattern unlock which results in opening the Pattern unlock screen so as to enable the user to unlock the device by entering pattern (as is illustrated in Figure 6c).
Referring to Figure 6d, an exemplary manifestation of the alignment of the virtual zones in reference to example illustrated in Figures 6a is shown. As said before, the virtual zones are aligned based on various parameters such as, favourite mode, common mode, battery usage, bandwidth availability, RAM consumption, network strength etc. shall be determined. Further, the size (length) of the virtual zones is also dependent on the above parameters. In the present case, 6 virtual zones i.e. virtual zone 602 corresponding to Pattern unlock, virtual zone 604 corresponding to PIN unlock, virtual zone 606 corresponding to Password unlock, , virtual zone 608 corresponding to face recognition unlock, virtual zone 610 corresponding to signature unlock, virtual zone 612 corresponding to swipe unlock having variable length is illustrated. In the present case, as unlocking the screen by means of a PIN is most frequently used by a user, and accordingly, the length of the virtual zone 602 is the highest in comparison to other virtual zones. Similarly, the length of other virtual zones has also been indicated wherein the said length is dependent on the aforesaid parameters.
