Optimised Spherical Vector Quantisation

Abstract: The invention relates to a method for encoding an input point on an n-dimensional sphere by encoding n-1 spherical coordinates of said input point, the method comprising sequential scalar quantisation of the n-1 spherical coordinates (E102-1 to E102-(n-1)) in order to obtain at most 2n-2 candidates at the end of the sequential scalar quantisation of the n-1 coordinates (E105), and subsequently selecting (E106) the best candidate which minimises a distance between the input point and the at most 2n-2 candidates, and determining the separate quantisation indices resulting from the sequential scalar quantisation of the spherical coordinates of the best candidate and sequentially encoding (E107) the separate quantisation indices of the best candidate. The invention also relates to a corresponding decoding method, an encoding device and a decoding device.
