Abstract: A multilayer laminate comprising: i) at least one paper layer in the range of about 30 to 60 GSM; ii) at least one soft tempered metal foil of thickness about 6 to 10 microns; and iii) at least one adhesive layer in the range of 1 to 4 GSM, joining the paper layer and the metal foil; to form a laminate adapted to be a dead fold laminate. A process for making the dead fold laminate is also disclosed.

THE FOLLOWING SPECIFICATION DESCRIBES THE INVENTION
This invention relates to a packaging material.
What is envisaged in accordance with this invention is a packaging laminate which has the 'dead fold property.'
Laminates or any sheet material typically have a springy action when folded. If creased or folded the fold does not remain in place and however much the fold is made the fold separates and springs back at an angle typically between five to even thirty degrees between the fold.
This invention envisages a laminate which when folded or creased will remain folded to within 0 to 2 degrees between the fold and for all practical purposes has a dead fold.
According to this invention there is provided a dead fold laminate consisting of Paper of grammage: ranging from 25-100 gsm and Al Foil of thickness 5 micron to 100 micron, typically 5 to 50 microns adhered to each other by a suitable adhesive.
The laminate is made in a process which includes carrying out wet lamination and/or dry lamination.
Typically, the adhesive is applied by a gravure process and the laminates are bonded by calendaring.
In accordance with a preferred embodiment of this invention the laminate may be coated. The coatings can be either on Al side or on the paper side depending on which side is suggested for food contact. The coatings may be
9
a) To enable heat sealing, use of a heat seal lacquer.
b) To enable the material to have moisture and oxygen barrier and therefore heat sealed, a PVdC coating will be provided.
c) To enable release of food material, a release coating will be used.
d) Foil may not be coated at all if the application does not demand.
The laminate in accordance with this invention will be a primary packing material as it will come in direct contact with food material. It will be applicable for foods materials as slabs, blocks, bars, strips, sticks, rocks, slices and such shapes and sizes in single and multiple servings.
The laminate in accordance with this invention is applicable for confectionery with high fat, especially milk fat which will be soft at room temperature. Products with unique flavour, taste, aroma, texture, mouth-feel which have character impact criteria for their uniqueness of the food product and which must be retained upto the end of its shelf life, such as milk based sweetmeats, baked goods, gums, chocolates, chikis, hard boiled confections and nuts with unique coatings, baked goods of high value.
The laminate can be used as wrappers , envelope wrap, twist wrap, bunch wrap, sealed unit and multi serve pouches, bag-in-box packs and the like.
