Pendrive With Operating System Controlled In Built Permanent Data Storage Partition

Abstract: The inventor of the present invention has developed a pen-drive with in-built lost and theft detection measures. ROM a permanent storage memory is installed inside the hardware of pen-drive which is controlled by operating system. The ROM is further programmed to store the information about the owner which cannot be formatted. Hence, owner information is permanently stored in ROM memory. The log files is maintained for each operation performed in the pen-drive (open, cut, copy, delete and format). But in case of delete and format, an image file is kept in the fix security memory space provided in the pen-drive itself.

The following specification particularly describes the invention and the manner in which it is to be performed.

FIELD OF INVENTION
The invention relates to the field of electronic data storage devices. More specifically, it relates to a pen-drive with operating system controlled in- built permanent data storage partition.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Pen-drives also called as USB flash drives is a flash memory data storage device that is integrated with USB interface. They are usually removable and rewritable and have memory capacity ranges from 128 megabytes to 64 gigabytes. Pen-drive consists of a small printed circuit board carrying the circuit elements and a USB connector which is electrically insulated and protected inside a plastic, metal or rubberized case. The USB connector is further protected by a removable cap or by retracting into the body of the drive. Pen-drives draw power from the computer via the USB connection.
Pen-drives have replaced the use of floppy disk that has limited storage capacity. Therefore, they are used for storage, data back-up and transfer of computer files. Pen-drivesare smaller, faster, durable, and reliable which have more capacity to store. Furthermore, they are immune to electromagnetic interference and are not prone to surface scratches as compared to floppy disks/compact discs. Thus, pen-drives are getting more popular as the preferred personal digital storage medium .Due to its daily usage, users have a tendency to misplace or loose pen drives that have sensitive information. Several solutions have been proposed like encrypting the information on the pen-drive so that the stored information can be accessed only by the owner. But, this requires additional software application to be installed on the pen-drive which will maintain a log of files opened, copied, deleted, cut, and formatted from the pen-drive.
Therefore the present invention is intended to prevent sensitive information from falling into the wrong hands in cases of misplaced or lost pen drives.
Problems in existing Pen-drives:
1. No existing pen-drive is designed which can report for the log files, copied and deleted files from the pen-drive.
2. No existing pen-drive is designed for permanent storing of owner’s detail in the pen-drive hardware which cannot be rewritten after first use.

Innovative approach proposed by the inventor
The inventor of the present invention has developed a pen-drive with in-built lost and theft detection mechanism. ROM a permanent storage memory is installed inside the hardware of pen-drive which is controlled by operating system. The ROM is further programmed to store the information about the owner which cannot be formatted. Hence, owner information is permanently stored in ROM memory.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
The following description is of the best-contemplated mode of carrying out the invention. The description is made for the purpose of illustrating the general principles of the invention and should not be taken in a limiting sense.
The inventor of the present invention has developed a pen-drive having a ROM chip installed inside the hardware of the drive which can permanently store owner’s information that cannot be formatted.
Pen-drive consists of a USB connector (1) which is connected to the controller (2). USB controller (2) is used to control the entire operation of the pen-drive. The USB connector includes a plug end for connecting with a USB port of a computer. ROM chip (3) is embedded inside the hardware of the pen-drive which is controlled by the operating system. This area stores the owner’s information and the list of the files which is stolen using open, cut, copy, delete and format operations from the pen-drive. ROM chip is further connected with Flash memory EEPROM (4) which is used in storing all the data.
Software is installed in the EEPROM (4) which itself deals with the open, cut, copy, delete and format operation performed in the drive. A log file is maintained for these operations, which is stored in the pen-drive. Log Files are placed in the memory space of EEPROM partition as illustrated in Fig 1 that stores all the information of a file/folder (open, cut, copy, delete, format). This memory space is designed according to the storage capacity required for the safety measures and also helps in storing images of the deleted files. In case of formatting, a window pops up asking for the backup of the files. If this option is selected the software assistance will keep the backup of the files. The maximum number of backup files assisted by the software is directly proportional to the memory space provided for the security purpose by the manufacturer at the time of manufacturing and while saving the image of the deleted file before creating an image for the deleted file, a check process will take place either file is an image file/music file/video file or a document file. If it is a document file it will be preferred over image file/music file/video file in the same order as mentioned.

Steps involved in the working of Pen-drive
1. At the manufacturing time, ROM which is a permanent storage memory is installed in the hardware of the Pen-drive.
2. ROM is further programmed to store the information about the owner which is controlled by the operating system.
3. When the pen-drive is inserted into the computer the ROM burns and a window is displayed asking for the information particulars to be filled in by the owner for the safety measures it includes the name of the user (5), Password (6) and login id (7).Change in password (8) option is also provided in case a user forgets the password.
4. After the first usage, whenever the pen drive is inserted into the computer the first screen which is displayed will contain the name of the owner(12), contact information (Owner’s Office Address (14) and Home Address (13) with Mobile Number) and a phrase “Please return if it is a loss case”(15).
5. The information entered in ROM of the Pen-drive will not change once entered by the owner and permanently stored in the ROM.
6. Pen Drive is restricted with system software which contains profile details.
7. Whenever a pen drive is inserted into the computer and if it is not password protected or somehow data is copied from the drive, than this pen drive will have details of which data file is copied from the drive and make it visible to the owner.
Novelty
The novelty of the present invention lies in developing a pen-drive with lost and theft detection measures. This enables in storing owner’s information and the list of the files which is stolen (Using operations i.e. Open, Cut, Copy, Delete and Format) from the pen-drive.
Inventive step
The inventor has achieved novelty by developing a pen-drive with lost and theft detection measures. ROM a permanent storage memory is installed inside the hardware of pen-drive which is controlled by operating system. The ROM is further programmed to store the information about the user which cannot be formatted. Hence, owner’s information is permanently stored in ROM memory. This will also help in detecting the stolen data (Using operations i.e. Open, Cut, Copy, Delete and Format) from the pen-drive.
Industrial application
Pen-drive with lost and theft detection measures finds varied industrial applications. The present invention helps in storing owner’s information and also provides the information regarding the stolen data by using Open, Cut, Copy, Delete and Format operations. Therefore it is a useful device. Manufacturing Pen drives is a common technique these days and incorporating the feature of Inbuilt ROM which is controlled by the Operating System is also not difficult. Hence it can be easily manufactured at an industrial scale.
In the preceding description, the invention is described with reference to exemplary flow charts thereof. Various modifications and changes may be made thereto without departing from the broader spirit and scope of the invention as set forth in the claims. The specification and drawings are accordingly, to be regarded in an illustrative rather than a restrictive sense. Thus without analysis, the foregoing will so fully reveal the gist of the present invention that others can, by applying current knowledge, readily adapt it for various applications without omitting features that from the standpoint of prior art, fairly constitute essential characteristics of the generic or specific aspects of this invention.
