Preforming Cartons

Abstract: Aspects for preforming cartons are described. According to an aspect, a carton-making system (100) includes a longitudinal crease folding tool (202) to create one or more longitudinal creases (242, 248, 250, 258, 260) and includes a lateral crease folding tool (204) to create one or more lateral creases (256, 262, 264, 266) in a cardboard blank (200). Further, the carton-making system (100) includes a click-lock forming tool (226) having a crease folding tool (232) to create a crease (236) opposite to the connecting edge of a lid (216) in the cardboard blank (200). The crease (236) opposite to the connecting edge forms a closing edge (239) of the lid (216). Further, the click-lock forming tool (226) includes a prefolding hook (234) to create a crease (238-1, 238-2) on each longitudinal end of the closing edge (239) for forming a click-lock at the closing edge (239).

Specification

CLIAMS:1. A carton-making system (100) for preforming cartons comprising:
at least one longitudinal crease folding tool (202) to create one or more longitudinal creases (242, 248, 250, 258, 260) in a cardboard blank (200), wherein the one or more longitudinal creases (242, 248, 250, 258, 260) are to form longitudinal edges of walls (208, 210, 212, 214) of the carton;
at least one lateral crease folding tool (204) to create one or more lateral creases (256, 262, 264, 266) in the cardboard blank (200), wherein the one or more lateral creases (256, 262, 264, 266) are to form a connecting edge of a lid (216) and connecting edges of bottom flaps (218, 220, 222, 224) of the carton, the connecting edge of the lid (216) and the connecting edges of the bottom flaps (218, 220, 222, 224) connecting the lid (216) and the bottom flaps (218, 220, 222, 224), respectively, to the walls (208, 210, 212, 214) of the carton; and
a click-lock forming tool (226) comprising,
at least one crease folding tool (232) to create a crease (236) opposite to the connecting edge of the lid (216) in the cardboard blank (200), wherein the crease (236) opposite to the connecting edge is to form a closing edge (239) of the lid (216) of the carton; and
a prefolding hook (234) to create a crease (238-1, 238-2) on each longitudinal end of the closing edge (239) of the carton.

The carton-making system (100) as claimed in claim 1, further comprising a conveyor system (228) connecting the at least one longitudinal crease folding tool (202), the at least one lateral crease folding tool (204), and the click-lock forming tool (226) for carrying the cardboard blank (200) from and to the at least one longitudinal crease folding tool (202), the at least one lateral crease folding tool (204), and the click-lock forming tool (226).

3. The carton-making system (100) as claimed in claim 1, further comprising a gluing unit (230) for gluing open longitudinal edges of the cardboard blank (200).

4. The carton-making system (100) as claimed in claim 3 wherein the gluing unit (230) is downstream with respect to the at least one longitudinal crease folding tool (202), the at least one lateral crease folding tool (204), and the click-lock forming tool (226).

5. A method for preforming a carton, the method comprising:
feeding a cardboard blank (200) to a carton-making system (100);
folding at least one longitudinal crease (242, 248, 250, 258, 260) in the cardboard blank (200) by the carton-making system (100), wherein the at least one longitudinal crease (242, 248, 250, 258, 260) is to form a longitudinal edge of a wall (208, 210, 212, 214) of the carton;
creating at least one lateral crease (256, 262, 264, 266) in the cardboard blank (200) by the carton-making system (100), wherein the at least one lateral crease (256, 262, 264, 266) is to form one of a connecting edge of a lid (216) and a connecting edge of a bottom flap (218, 220, 222, 224) of the carton, the connecting edge of the lid (216) and the connecting edge of the bottom flap (218, 220, 222, 224) connecting the lid (216) and the bottom flap (218, 220, 222, 224), respectively, to the wall (208, 210, 212, 214) of carton;
folding a crease (236) opposite to the connecting edge of the lid (216) in the cardboard blank (200) using at least one crease folding tool (232) of the carton-making system (100), wherein the crease (236) opposite to the connecting edge is to form a closing edge (239) of the lid (216) of the carton;
creating a crease (238-1, 238-2) on each longitudinal end of the closing edge (239), using a prefolding hook (234) of the carton-making system (100), for forming a click-lock at the closing edge (239) of the carton.

6. The method as claimed in claim 5, wherein the folding the at least one longitudinal crease (242, 248, 250, 258, 260) comprises:
creating a first longitudinal crease (242) at a first open longitudinal edge (244) of the cardboard blank (200), the first open longitudinal edge (244) forming a first gluing flap (246) of the carton and is formed at a wall (214) having the connecting edge of the lid (216);
folding a central longitudinal crease (248) in the cardboard blank (200); and
creating a second longitudinal crease (250) at a second open longitudinal edge (252) of the cardboard blank (200), wherein the second open longitudinal edge (252) is opposite to the first open longitudinal edge (244) and forms a second gluing flap (254) of the carton.

7. The method as claimed in claim 6, wherein the folding the at least one longitudinal crease (242, 248, 250) is achieved upstream of the folding the crease (236) opposite to the connecting edge of the lid (216).

8. The method as claimed in claim 5, wherein the folding the at least one longitudinal crease (242, 248, 250, 258, 260) comprises:
creating a third longitudinal crease (258) on the wall (214) having the connecting edge of the lid (216), wherein the third longitudinal crease (258) is to be opposite to the first open longitudinal edge (244); and
creating a fourth longitudinal crease (260) on a wall (208) having the second longitudinal crease (250), wherein the fourth longitudinal crease (260) is to be opposite to the second longitudinal crease (252).

9. The method as claimed in claim 8, wherein the folding the at least one longitudinal crease (258, 260) is achieved downstream of the folding the crease (236) opposite to the connecting edge of the lid (216).

10. The method as claimed in one of claim 6 and claim 8 further comprising:
folding the cardboard blank (200) along the third longitudinal crease (258) and along the fourth longitudinal crease (260); and
attaching the first gluing flap (to the second gluing flap to preform the carton.

The method as claimed in claim 5, wherein the creating the at least one lateral crease (256, 262, 264, 266) comprises creating a first lateral crease (256) in the cardboard blank (200), the first lateral crease (256) being adjacent to the first longitudinal crease (242) and opposite to the closing edge (239) of the lid (216) of the carton.

12. The method as claimed in claim 11, wherein the creating the at least one lateral crease (256) is achieved upstream of the folding the crease (236) opposite to the connecting edge of the lid (216).

13. The method as claimed in claim 5, wherein the creating the at least one lateral crease (256, 262, 264, 266) further comprises:
creating a second lateral crease (262) in the cardboard blank (200), the second lateral crease (262) being adjacent to the central longitudinal crease (248) and the fourth longitudinal crease (260);
creating a third lateral crease (264) in the cardboard blank (200), the third lateral crease (264) being adjacent to the central longitudinal crease (248) and the third longitudinal crease (258);
creating a fourth lateral crease (266) in the cardboard blank (200), the fourth lateral crease (266) being adjacent to the second longitudinal crease (250) and the fourth longitudinal crease (260).

14. The method as claimed in claim 13, wherein the creating the at least one lateral crease (262, 264, 266) is achieved downstream of the folding the crease (236) opposite to the connecting edge of the lid (216).
