Process For Hydrolysis Of Biomass

Abstract: “PROCESS FOR HYDROLYSIS OF BIOMASS” ABSTRACT The present disclosure relates to a simple, economical and effective process for the hydrolysis of biomass into sugars under mild reaction conditions. The said process comprises hydrolyzing biomass in presence of a catalyst such as, ionic liquid and polar solvent under autogenous pressure conditions and heating conditions to obtain sugars. Then, the reaction mixture is cooled to room temperature and the products, such as, sugars are isolated from the reaction mixture.

Specification

Claims:We Claim:
1. A process for hydrolysis of biomass, said process comprising step of reacting the biomass with salt of N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone.

2. The process as claimed in claim 1, wherein the salt of N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone is selected from a group comprising N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone methyl sulfonate, N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone phosphate and a combination thereof.

3. The process as claimed in claim 1, wherein the biomass is selected from a group comprising lignocellulose containing biomass, hemicellulose containing biomass and combinations thereof.

4. The process as claimed in claim 1, wherein the biomass is selected from a group comprising red gram, cotton stalk, castor stalk and combinations thereof.

5. The process as claimed in claim 1, wherein the biomass is loaded at about 5 % to 20 % w/w, preferably about 5 % w/w.

6. The process as claimed in claim 1, wherein concentration of salt of N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone ranges from about 5 to 15% w/w, preferably ranges from about 10 to 12.5 % w/w.

7. The process as claimed in claim 5, wherein concentration of salt of N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone more preferably about 10 % w/w.

8. The process as claimed in claim 5, wherein concentration of salt of N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone more preferably about 12.5 % w/w.

9. The process as claimed in claim 1, wherein the process is carried out in presence of solvent, preferably polar solvent.

10. The process as claimed in claim 8, wherein the polar solvent is water.

11. The process as claimed in claim 1, wherein the hydrolysis is carried out at a temperature ranging from about 100° C to 115° C, preferably about 110° C.

12. The process as claimed in claim 1, wherein the hydrolysis is carried out for a time period ranging from about 30 minutes to 90 minutes, preferably about 60 minutes.

13. The process as claimed in claim 1, wherein the hydrolysis is carried out in classical procedure employed conditions in conventional systems or in reactor, preferably in the reactor equipped with impeller.

14. The process as claimed in claim 1, wherein the hydrolysis is carried out under pressure, preferably under autogenous pressure conditions.

15. The process as claimed in claim 1, wherein the hydrolysis further comprise isolation and purification; wherein said isolation is carried out by acts selected from a group comprising addition of solvent, quenching, filtration, extraction and combination of thereof; and wherein the purification is carried out by crystallization.
