Ready To Wear Adjustable Underskirt

Abstract: In one embodiment, an upper portion 102 of the petticoat (waist to the buttocks) is made from a cotton satin stretch material. A band 106 is provided at the waist portion made from the same material for further localized support. There is a slit with hooks for ease of pulling up the petticoat. The adjustable hooks are offered (but not necessary for the functioning) for further flexibility so that when a heavier sari is being worn additional comfort and a sense of security can be derived by the wearer. The entire upper portion 102 is sewn using a flat lock machine so that when the petticoat is stretched the seams stay in place without breaking. The bottom portion 104 of the petticoat may be made of cotton poplin material. The top portion 102 is sewn on to the bottom using a standard sewing machine.

, Description:TECHNICAL FIELD
[0001] This invention, in general relates to the field of apparel. More particularly, the present invention relates to adjustable and ready-to-wear/pull-on clothing.

BACKGROUND
[0002] Dress is covering, or clothing and accessories, for the human body. The variety of dress is immense, varying with different sexes, cultures geographic areas, and historic eras. And so the term dress encompasses not only such familiar garments as shirts, skirts, trousers, jackets and coats but also footwear, caps and hats, sleepwear, sports clothes, corsets and gloves.
[0003] A sari is a piece of cloth or material, usually about six (6) yards in length, decoratively wrapped around the body. In order to properly wear a sari, a user typically also needs a petticoat and a blouse. The petticoat is an undergarment, similar to a slip, which may run from the waist to the ankle, ending just above the bottom hem of the sari. In fashion industry the petticoats are used as the under layer with additional embellishments or as a base. Typically, petticoats are tied tightly around the waist (or just above the hip), in order to hold up the weight of the sari. The sari is typically wrapped around the waist, tucked into the tight petticoat, with pleats also tucked into the petticoat, and with the remainder of the sari wrapped around the back and draped over a shoulder. As an undergarment, a petticoat is worn beneath the sari bottom and may cause discomfort to users during hours of extended wear. Traditionally, once the petticoat and blouse are in place, the user would wrap and tuck the first few yards of sari fabric around the waist of the petticoat, create pleats, tuck the pleats into the waist of the petticoat, and then continue wrapping the remainder of the sari around the back and drape either shoulder, depending on the style desired by the user.
[0004] However, the traditional sari petticoat is tied using a cord or a string which can be uncomfortable, cause disfiguration and rash. Multiple steps are involved in positioning, adjusting, and wearing the sari and the garment or pleats frequently tend to come loose. In addition, pleats may not be uniform in size due to human error, may become unfolded causing the sari to fall from the body or the user to trip over loose fabric.
[0005] Also, with a traditional petticoat, the petticoat must be tight enough at the waist to prevent dislodging or other loosening of the sari garment. As indicated, there are several obstacles associated with wearing a traditional sari properly. The cords, used for affirming the position of the petticoats, causes bunching of the fabric, which is unsightly and more likely to cause a user's overhanging skin and/or fat to spill across the waistband resulting in the appearance of an unsightly and undesirable “muffin top”.
[0006] Thus, the obstacles to wearing comfortable sari garments increase for women who have gained weight or are pregnant. The sari may become uncomfortable as the belly expands. The heavier and/or pregnant user may experience difficulty finding a petticoat that accommodates the expanding midsection. In addition, the petticoat, traditionally worn tightly against the midsection, may be incredibly uncomfortable and may leave indentations or sears on the skin after extended wear.
[0007] A product called “shapewear” by company Zivame is available in the market today, which is used to wear under sari. However the product is made completely using a polyester stretch material from top to bottom with a slit on both sides. However, this type of clothing is used to wear under western wear or separate lower dress. Also, the use of polyester material makes it difficult to wear it under sari all day long. In addition the tight fitting along the length of leg makes mobility difficult. Also depending on the transparency of the sari the clinginess of the petticoat will be clearly visible.
[0008] Further, according to a publication by Telegraph news, Indian doctors claim that sari wearers at greater risk of cancer. According to the article, the women’s contract the disease through skin irritation from knotting their petticoats too tightly in the same position over a long period of time. The article further discloses that the string of the sari petticoat, if tied in the same place day after day for an extended period, can cause chronic irritation. The constant irritation can result in scaling or pigmentation. Also, according to the article these tight petticoat strings induce various dermatoses along the waist in females and may rarely give rise to malignancy.
[0009] The present invention addresses many of the previously mentioned concerns by adapting the petticoats into a single pull-on garment for the bottom portion of the sari. The present invention also includes an adjustable waistband to accommodate for weight gain or loss and differing weight of the sari (ex -heavy silks and light weight chiffons) while maintaining the comfort due to the pressure being distributed over a large surface area and by avoiding tight knots against the skin. With this invention, users can achieve the look of the complex traditional sari, without fear of the petticoats becoming loose or dislodged from its proper position. An added benefit would be the appearance of a slimmer figure especially in the stomach and buttocks area.

SUMMARY
[00010] The object of the present application is to eliminate the requirement of cords for holding petticoats, provide support from waist to the buttocks area giving a more flattering figure, keep pleats of sari in place more firmly and securely, and adapt to the changing requirement of the modern woman.

[0012] Accordingly, in one implementation, an improved expandable and adjustable wearing apparel is provided. The improved adjustable wearing apparel includes a body portion forming a tubular fabric body shape. The body portion includes at least two portions, an upper stretchable portion and a lower portion.
[0013] The upper stretchable portion is made of at least one first fabric. The upper stretchable portion elastically fits a waist and extends to the buttocks of a user thereby cylindrically covering the waist and the buttocks of the user.
[0014] The lower portion is connected to at least a bottom portion of the upper stretchable portion. The lower portion is made of at least one second fabric and cylindrically covers the legs and run to the ankle of the user.
[0015] In one implementation, the body portion further contains a top edge and a bottom edge, the upper stretchable portion adapted to be the top edge, and the top edge adapted to be the bottom edge.
[0016] In one implementation, the at least one first fabric is, preferably, a cotton satin lycra fabric. A fabric suitable for the Indian climate. However, other suitable synthetic polyester / spandex / lycra like material can be used.

[0022] In one implementation, the upper stretchable portion is sewn, preferably, by using a flat lock machine so that when the wearing apparel is stretched the seams stay in place without breaking.
[0023] In one implementation, the upper stretchable portion comprises at least a retractable phone pocket and a hidden pocket.
[0024] In one implementation, a horizontal seam between the top stretch material and the bottom cotton poplin can be eliminated by a customised weave allowing a seamless transition between the two functions
[0025] In contrast to the existing petticoats, according to the present invention by eliminating the cord do away with discomfort, disfiguration and potential rash. In addition to the comfort level of the petticoat, the design of the improved adjustable wearing apparel flatters the wearer by compressing the stomach and buttocks area giving the wearer a slimmer feel and look.
