Shell Connector Assembly And Method For Laser Welding Of Interference Shield On Aluminium Shell

Abstract: A shell connector assembly (10) is disclosed which includes an Aluminium shell (12) placed around a rear portion of a connector having a plug or receptacle (14) extending therethrough. A slot in plug (20) is disposed in a groove on a front portion of the Aluminium shell (12) and behind a master key (18) located on the Aluminium shell (12). A base shim (16) having a plurality of fused welding regions (32, 34) on its surface is placed on the slot in plug (20). An interference shield (22) having a plurality of fingers (24) is attached along the circumference of the Aluminium shell (12) by laser welding the interference shield (22) with the base shim (16) at the plurality of fused welding regions (32, 34) to protect the connector from electromagnetic/radio-frequency interference.
