Abstract: Disclosed herein an efficient and cost effective system and method for extinguishing the fire in rail coaches. The system according to the invention is developed using available resources in the coach such as water tank and wherein the system arrangement is been done in a manner to enable the train passengers or driver or guard to extinguish the fire almost immediately even without any outside help.
SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR EXTINGUISHING FIRE IN RAIL COACHES
Field of the Invention
In general, this invention relates to a system and method for controlling fire in rail coaches.
In particularly, the present invention is directed to a cost effective system and easy method
to extinguish the fire in rail coaches almost immediately.
Background of the Invention
There have been many incidents of fire in the train or rail coach. It has been usually
observed that when a rail coach catches fire, there is no technique or system available to
bring the fire under complete control. It becomes impossible most of the times for the fire
engines to reach at the accident spot either due in accessible area or congested spots.
Various approaches have been disclosed in the prior arts with respect to fire safety system
such as; by removing curtains from the AC coaches, by using such material which has high
ignition rate^by using fire alarm systems etc. However, there are still lots of shortcomings in
these system for controlling fire in rail coaches.
The provision of setting fire alarm systems in the trains is one precautionary steps, however,
it leads fcTstampede and chaos in the rail coaches. These are mere precautionary steps but
not a solution.
There is no such system available in any part of the worid, which enable complete fire
control. As mentioned above, there are certain precautionary measures available or being
used but none of them are effective of bringing the fire under control immediately.
Thus, there is a need for a system which is capable of extinguishing fire of rail coaches
immediately and also developing in a manner to provide an advantage with respect to time,
cost and effort.,
Description of the Invention
It is principal object of the present invention to provide a cost effective and easy to use
system and method for fire extinguishing in a rail coach, wherein available resources in the
coach has been used to develop the system.

In accordance with a preferred embodiment of the inventipn, there is provided a system for
extinguish the fire in rail coaches, wherein the system comprising water tanks situated on the
top of the four toilets are interconnected with a help of pipes and another pipe is installed on
the roof of the coach which is further connected to an outlet of a pump. The water of all the
four water tanks reaches the outlet of the pump which is installed under the under frame of
the coach through a pipe.
In accordance with a preferred embodiment of the invention, there is provided a method for
extinguish the fire in rail coaches, wherein the method is performed by pulling an emergency
chain in the coach in case of fire which enable the power cut from the junction box and starts
the pump. The water pump sprinkles the water inside the coach through different openings.
Thereby bringing the fire under control in a quick and effective manner without wasting
precious time. The pipe in the toilet tanks is installed in such a manner that there is always
some water in reserve for such eventualities.
According to figure 1, the water tanks situated on the top of the four toilets in the coach are
inter connected with pipe(1) and pipe (2) which further connected to pipe (3) as shown in the
drawing below. The pipe (3) takes the water from all the four tanks to the inlet of the pump
(8). One more pipe (9) which starts from the outlet of the pump (8) is connected to another
pipe (10) at the roof of the coach. The same pipe (10) is used to provide water to the
different outlets or sprinklers (12) installed in the coach.
Further, there is a wire (5) installed in the'coach wherein one end (A) of the wire is
fixed and the other end (B) is tied to Racher (7). One end (c) of another wire (11) is
also connected to Racher(7) which helps in turning the pump on and off. Wire (5) and
(14) has a chain pulley connected to them in every cabin to be pulled in case of any
fire which turns the pump on and also bring the train to stop. The pipe (4) is
connected in such a manner with all the four tanks situated on the top of the four
toilets in the coach that there is always some water in reserve. Refereeing Figure 1,
wherein it is shown that pipe (4) which is connected to the tank is arranged little
above than the pipe (1) and (2), which is connected with the pipe (3). The arrangement
is such that the tank will contain some water every time, wherein the same can be
used to flow through the pipe (3), (9) and sprinkle through sprinkler (12) to control the
fire.

Further, said system contain a sensor (15), which sense the smoke due to fire and
raise an alarm to enable taking fast action for extinguishing fire, wherein parallely the
method of extinguishing starts.
According to the present invention, once the alarm raised, the chain (6) is pulled by
anyone which automatically pulled the chain (14) and (5) which enable stopping the
train. Further, the chain (5) also control the racher (7) in a manner so that it moves to
enable switching off the junction box (8) and stop the current, parellaly the racher (7)
movement is also enabling to switching on the pump to start water flow from the tank
through the connected pipes and controlling the fire through sprinkling the water via
sprinklers.
According to preferred embodiment of the present invention, the method of performing said
system is disclosed, wherein in case of fire, the chain pulley (6) is pulled in the effected
coach which is connected to the wire (5) which turns on the pump and (14) which brings the
train to a halt. Wire (5) also moves the position of Racher (7) from end B to B' which cuts the
power supply of the coach. If the fire is due to short circuit it will stop. Once the power supply
is cut the C end of Racher (7) moves to C which turns on the pump (8) which pushes the
water from inlet pipe(3) to the pipe (9) and (10) which pushes it to different outlet units
sprinklers (12)installed in the coach and brings the fire under control.
While the present invention has been described in terms of particular embodiments and
applications, in both summarized and detailed forms, it is not intended that these
descriptions in any way limit its scope to any such embodiments and applications, and it will
be understood that many substitutions, changes and variations in the described
embodiments, applications and details of the method and system iRustrated herein and of
their operation can be made by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of this
invention.
