How to obtain a Birth Certificate in Delhi?

In India, registration of births is mandatory as per the Registration of Births and Death Act, 1969. Each state has its bodies that are responsible for issuing such certificates. In Delhi, the Birth Certificate is issued by local bodies such as the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, New Delhi Municipal Corporation, Delhi Cantonment Board, etc. This article discusses, in brief, the process of obtaining a birth certificate in Delhi.

A birth certificate is a vital document that records a person's birth in India. This certificate plays an important role in establishing the child's identity and is also required for school admissions to issue documents such as passports, voters ID, etc. In Delhi, by virtue of the provisions of the Registration of Births and Death Act, 1969, registration of every birth is mandatory.

Who may apply for a Birth Certificate in Delhi?

In Delhi, every birth must be registered within 21 days at the place of occurrence in the prescribed reporting forms by persons as stated below:

How to apply for a Birth Certificate in Delhi?

The aforesaid persons may apply in the following manner to the concerned local bodies i.e., either Municipal Corporation of Delhi, New Delhi Municipal Corporation, Delhi Cantonment Board depending on the place of birth as under:


1. Online Application:

The concerned person may apply for a birth certificate online on the concerned website of the Delhi Government such as the website of New Delhi Municipal Corporation (https://sso.ndmc.gov.in/ndmc/homePage) under ‘online services’.

2. Physical Application:
The concerned person may also apply for a birth certificate by visiting the office of the concerned Sub-Divisional Magistrate or the concerned local bodies in whose jurisdiction such birth has taken place.

Fees applicable for obtaining a Birth Certificate in Delhi

The following fees are required to be paid for the registration of births in Delhi:

Documents required to be submitted

The following documents are required to be submitted along with the application form for obtaining a birth certificate in Delhi:

1. Proof of birth of the concerned child;
2. Affidavit considering the place, date, and time of the birth of the child (proforma available at http://ihbas.delhigovt.nic.in/wps/wcm/connect/DoIT/delhi+govt/birth+certificate/birth+certificate)
3. Residential certificate of the parents for the concerned year; and
4. Parents’ Identity proof.

In case of delayed birth registration, in addition to the above, the parents will be also required to submit a request letter to the concerned authority.
