August 24, 2026 by Amit Kumar

Class 27 under the Nice Classification covers carpets, rugs, mats, matting, linoleum, and other materials for covering existing floors.

Scope

Class 27 includes floor coverings and materials used to cover or protect floors.

Goods covered under this class generally include:

  • Carpets, rugs, and mats
  • Linoleum and other floor coverings
  • Wall-to-wall carpeting
  • Door mats and bath mats
  • Artificial turf and grass for sports and leisure
  • Floor mats for vehicles
  • Underlay for carpets

Classification principle: If the product is a material designed to be laid on a floor for covering, decoration, or protection, it generally falls within Class 27.

Key Updates – Nice Classification (2026 Update)

As per the Nice Classification updates 2026, the following clarifications are particularly relevant to Class 27:

  • Clearer separation between:
    • Floor coverings (Class 27), and
    • Textile fabrics (Class 24)
  • Refined terminology to reduce overlap with:
    • Building materials such as tiles (Class 19)
    • Sports surfaces (Class 28)

Eco-friendly carpets made from recycled materials, modular carpet tiles, and anti-slip floor coverings are now more clearly classified in Class 27.

Practical takeaway: Describe the product as a floor covering rather than a textile fabric or building material.

Goods NOT Included in Class 27 (But Commonly Confused)

The following goods are excluded from Class 27, despite frequent misclassification:

  • Textile fabrics in piece form (Class 24)
  • Ceramic and stone floor tiles (Class 19)
  • Yoga and exercise mats (Class 28)
  • Wallpaper (Class 16 / Class 27 depending on use)
