How to Check Company Registration Number Online?

After a company is incorporated, the Registrar of Companies issues a certificate of registration, which contains a unique identification number that is known as CIN number along with the name of the company. CIN is used to track all the aspects of the company from the date of registration.

Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) is a government portal that contains the details of all the companies that are incorporated in India. MCA has details of all the types of companies like Limited Liability Partnership(LLP), public companies and one person companies that are registered with them.

People can check the Company registration number, type of company, date of incorporation, directors of the company, etc. from the site itself.

The MCA site also provides information regarding the balance sheets and other financial documents of the companies along with the annual returns on the website after payment of appropriate fees to them.

What is the Registration Number of the Company?

A company registration number is a unique number issued by Registrar of companies when any type of company that is incorporated. It is usually abbreviated as 'CIN' and is sometimes referred to as a CIN Number.

It is used for finding essential details of the companies registered in India under MCA, Govt. of India

Your CIN will consist of 21 digits alpha-numeric code that will be displayed on your certificate of incorporation along with the name of the company.

The CIN number of the company can also be seen on any company mail that is sent from ROC along with your company name.  The CIN number can also appear on the public register next to your company details.

The person incorporating the company cannot choose or change the CIN. As it will be a computer generated number based on a sequence depending on the state of incorporation and the type of company that the person has decided to set up.

Steps to Check CIN Number

Step 1: Log on to MCA website

Step 2: Go to 'MCA Services' tab and once hover over it a drop-down menu appears.

Step 3: Under 'Company Services' select 'Find CIN' option and click on it. The link will take you on the next page where based on the type of entity registered the person can select on to option LLP or company.

 Any person can conduct the search based on Registration No, Existing Company / LLP Name, Inactive CIN and Old Company / LLP Name.

Where to Use CIN No.?

As discussed above, all the official documents of the company must contain the CIN number. This requirement is made compulsory as per Section 12 of the Companies Act 2013.

The section made it compulsory to use the CIN number on the :

  • Letter Heads
  • Invoices
  • All public notification

Non-use of the CIN on the above-listed documents leads to a penalty of Rs 1000 per day on the company and the officer of the company.
