How to pay Income Tax Online with Challan 280?

Challan 280 is the mode to pay online the advance tax, routine assessment tax, additional charges, self-assessment tax, etc. It is paid online following a specified procedure.

How can one use the Challan 280?

Step One: Go to the tax information network of the Income Tax Department and click on ‘Proceed’ under the Challan 280 option.

Step Two:
1. Select the option of "Income Tax" and the type of payment.
2. Click on ‘Self-assessment tax’ if there are any taxes due while filing the income tax returns.
3. Select the mode of payment out of the two modes of payment – Debit Card or Net banking.
4. Click the relevant Assessment Year; for example, the period 1st April 2018 – 31st March 2019 is relevant for the AY 2019-20.

Here, you must enter the complete address, and next, enter the Captcha in the given room, and click on ‘Proceed’.

Step Three: Re-check the details entered and displayed and those required to submit the request to the bank. This will redirect to the payment page of the bank.

Step Four: On successful payment, a tax receipt shall appear on the next screen, where a person can check the payment details. Next, he shall receive the BSR code and the challan serial number on the right side of the challan.

The person must file a declaration in the income tax return on making the tax payment.
